Mouth ulcers
Hi Diane. I’m sorry. There isn’t much to help with this that you can buy over the counter. Warm salt water has always helped me and helped dry out ulcers.
I don’t know if y’all use something called magic swizzle or magic mouthwash over there but it contains any number of these ingredients: diphenhydramine, viscous lidocaine, antacid, nystatin, and corticosteroids.
This is the only thing I’ve found worked religiously. I would give it to all cancer patients on heavy duty chemo. Just make sure not to swallow it and always spit since it has some real drugs in it. It does require a prescription. Maybe someone can send in the request without having to see you?
You could try Cepacol lozenges or throat spray. This will provide relief for about an hour.
Hope you feel better and find a solution. Sending hugs. ❤️xx
Hi Diane46, sorry to hear about your sores. I get those constantly, normally they’re not too bad but I do get the occasional nose bleed. When my mouth ulcers have been at their worst, I’ve considered using the numbing gel they give to people with braces, as the old-style braces used to cut my mouth up pretty bad and the numbing gel used to help. But my orthodontist used to give it to me, so I’m not sure if you can get it over the counter? Maybe you could ask your dentist? Hope they settle down soon for you!
Thank you numbing gel sounds ok I will look for that is so bad everything I eat I give up on because it hurts going to try shakes tomorrow
Diflam is good for pain and ask to be perscribed some orabase. Steroid ulcer cream
Thank you I am speaking to my go today its good to have some ideas that I can ask for thank you again
Try Diflam Spray, it comes with a long nozzle so it will reach all your ulcers. I had them on my tonsils and I managed to spray them, it’s a wee bit difficult as you can’t swallow it. But it defo helps you eat as it numbs the actual ulcers and not your whole mouth.
That’s kind of where they are I don’t have tonsils but they are on my throat
I use corsodyl mouth wash and put bongela gel just before bed time…it works wonders. hope this helps.. x
I suffered terribly and was eventually prescribed calcium folinate (folinic acid) - similar to but not the same as folic acid, to be taken every day except the day I take methotrexate as it seems that MTX made the problem much worse. Before that I was prescribed Betamethasone 500 microgram soluble tablets and used them as a mouthwash (dissolve in 10mls water) 3 times a day after food. The betamethasone helped but the calcium folinate has worked much better for me. It hasn't got rid of the problem completely but it is now (mainly) bearable.
I don't think the GPs and specialists understand or have any idea how painful and life changing (in the fact that you can't eat properly) this is and I find it absolutely shocking that nobody seems to know what to do or is making any effort to make it better, properly better. There are so many aspects of lupus like that. It makes me quite angry and upset.
I hope you get something that works for you, and quickly.
I was about to suggest warm salty water but see JMiller has already done so. It has worked for me since I was a child and my GP in Australia, where we lived at the time, recommended rinsing my mouth and gargling with warm salty water 2 - 3 times per day. I have also used it in my nose. Worth a try. I hope you feel better soon. Xx
Hi Diane. I have started using Luvbiotics - probiotic lozenges which does appeared to have reduced the number of mouth ulcers I have. You can buy them on Amazon and probably elsewhere. Out of the gels, I found Corsodyl Gel the best, but often my ulcers are so far back in my mouth that it can be a challenge to reach!
Hope this helps,
Sarah x
Yes this is my problem I haven’t eaten anything for days that hard to swallow I even find soup hard to it stings when it gose past them I going to look now on Amazon thank you
Hi Diane, yes I can help you. My new Rheumy prescribed me a three in one mouthwash. It comprises of soluble prednisolone, soluble antibiotics and Nystatin liquid. You mix all three ( one pred, one antibiotic and 1 ml of Nystatin ) in 10 ml of warm water and rinse your mouth well and spit out. Repeat four times daily. It takes the sting out of the ulcers and shortens the time you have them. It is working really well for me. Good luck xx
Do you know the name or are the prescribed had 3 separate ones
Hi Diane , after many years of Crohn’’s and Lupus causing mouth ulcers I found a way to alleviate the soreness and promote quicker healing. I buy a tube of Igloo mouth ulcer gel and some v low dose hydrocortisone buccal tabs. Using 2 spoons ground 1 tablet to a powder and the squeeze a small amount of gel into powder and mix the 2 together. Best time is at night put some paste on the ulcer and in the day 20 mins before you eat. I find this a great remedy and one you can buy over the counter. Hope this helps.
Thank you
I have Difflam mouthwash on prescription Diane you can buy it but its a bit expensive. Its been the best thing I've used and clears ulcers and throat problems really well. I was using Bonjela some years ago till the dental clinic told me to stop and they prescribed Difflam.
For my nose sores I have Naseptin also prescribed. Its an antibiotic and has been the only cream to help. My nose was so bad I couldn't bear to touch it but the cream has made managing it tons better. Speak to your gp and ask about them. I'm diagnosed with Sjogrens. xxx
Hi Diane46, I was referred to the dental hospital for all of my mouth ulcers I used to get. It got so bad I couldn't eat at times. They ran some bloods but that didn't show anything to help. I was given some Prednisone to use as a mouthwash when they were really bad, told some foods to avoid but that still didn't stop them coming. Finally he recommended switching my toothpaste to sensodyne as it didn't contain the active foaming ingredient that could cause ulcers. This has been a complete game changer for me and now my ulcers (touch wood) are much less frequent. Wish I'd know this about the toothpaste all along. Good luck finding something to help.
