Leighlup,
I get mouth ulcers now and again, I try and gargle with cool boiled salted water, it really helps. I also found it very helpful, when I had a tooth extracted in hospital when I came home.
Bonjela gel helps too providing you can use it.
Difflam spray when they’re really bad. It numbs the area as it’s got anti inflammatory properties. I bought it over the counter
Make sure you are not iron deficient?
Corsodyl mouthspray helps - my doctor does it for me on prescription. Bonjela gives a little bit of temporary relief. I was advised to try a paste that was similar to iglu but I’ve never got on with it. The pharmacy gave me some little steroid tablets to use where you place it on the ulcer and that helps them heal quicker. And corsodyl mouthwash helps keep them at bay a little bit - again the gp prescribes this for me as I get so many of them.
Sounds odd - salt and vinegar crisps!
Hi Leighlup ,

Bonjela and salt and water mouthwashes. My dentist and dental hygienist said never use Corsodyl because it stains the teeth. I have no idea if this is true, but if it is, it may well be the lesser of two evils x
Hi,
I recently ended up with two really painful ulcers. Called my Rheumy and he prescribed Folic Acid. The rx is for 2 mg daily. After looking it up I'm guessing my ulcers were caused either by the meds I was on (Plaquenil and Imuran) lowered my blood cell count or the count was lowered just by the Lupus. Don't know which caused the problem but the Folic Acid worked wonderfully! Within a week of starting the meds the ulcers were clearing up and they haven't come back. Ive stayed on the Folic Acid and don't plan on stopping it.
While waiting for the meds to kick in I asked my pharmacist and she recommended an oral anesthetic that has 20% Benzocaine. It came in liquid form with a little dropper. I would simple put the liquid directly on the ulcer and it would numb the pain. This allowed me to be able to eat which was impossible before.
Hope this helps!
MTX gave me mouth ulcers. They were horrendous! I could not eat, speak and they even woke me in the night. Worse than having RA!
I made a list of some 20 solutions folks recommended and took the list to my local pharmacy. The Pharmacist said don't waste your money just use saline 4 to 5 times a day.
Holding warm saline in my mouth for 1 min 5 times a day worked. I could not gargle it was too painful.
Once I got rid of them which took about 2 weeks. I found that to keep them at bay I would take my MTX then 48hrs later I would feel the first signs the ulcers were returning then I would bathe my mouth 5 times a day for 48hrs. After 4 months the ulcers gave up their attack. They v occasionally reappear usually when I am v tired, and then it's back to the saline.
Difflam mouthwash works for me, I'd recommend it
