Hi Stillsmiling
I can recommend Difflam Mouthwash that you can either buy or get on prescription. If you use it before a meal it deadens the pain and would help you eat and drink. Mouth ulcers can be so painful for the first few days but do improve. Difflam has an anti- inflammatory ingredient which is why it works well. X
Hi stillsmiling
I have lupus and I used to get mouth ulcers constantly! What I found worked best for me was swapping my normal toothpaste and mouthwash to Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash. Biotene is specifically for dry mouths and whilst I wasn't really aware that I suffered from a dry mouth, this worked perfectly for my mouth ulcers. They all cleared up and I haven't had one now for about three years which is brilliant. I've even gone back to normal toothpaste and mouthwash and it's still fine. You can get Biotene from Boots and even though it's a bit expensive it's the only thing that's ever worked for me - and I'd tried absolutely everything!!
Lots of luck - I hope you find an answer soon xxx
I just bought some Biotene mouth spray, mouth wash and toothpaste at chemist earlier today and will also try difflam to help numb the pain. I think the hardest part is because the ulcers are under my tongue any movement seems to reopen them so they arent healing quickly. Im drinking yoghurt through a straw. Six days seems so much longer than it is!
Lloyds Pharmacy sells a red light wand called Mouth Ulcer Clear Advance for around £10(sorry can't remember exactly but it's no more than £20).I have found this very effective against my repeated mouth ulcers & it's one less medication!
I've had them on and off for years -- had a bout recently and now ok. I discovered that Lysine helps stop them and nips them in the bud when they are starting. I can take up to 3,000 mgs a day when they are cropping up. I spoke to my rheumatologist and asked if I should be taking them and she I should definitely be taking lysine. I didn't know about Biotene, but I also gargle with Lysterine--the orange one which a friend told me is good for mouth sores. I'm sorry you're going through this as I know how horribly painful they are. Best.
Difflam spray very effective . Bit tricky to direct at first but one soon gets the knack. Good luck mouth ulcers are the pits!
I take vit c and zinc when this happens. It is usually accompanied by a chronic sore throat. Nothing to do with a cold or being sick. See if that helps.
Thanks for the replies! Yep did start with sore throat and general unwell feeling. I actually dreamt last night I was eating a burger.
When I woke I was like "darn it" no burger today. Im considering an icepack on my cheek so see if that helps too as I feel like i have knocked about!
Agree about Biotene toothpaste and the mouthwash.
I been suffering from persistent mouth ulcers dry mouth and been using these products and have found they really help.
Also bought Orajel Mouth Gel for mouth ulcers, helps with the pain.

Hi my dental hygienist has told me to use aloe Vera tooth paste on my gums to sooth them , I have toothpaste on priscriptions from dentist which I use twice a day and I use the aloe at lunch times and if my gums start I rub in the aloe tooth paste in gums ,I found the best place was H&B the cheapest one they sell , I was told by hygienist this was the best way to go 4 months ago and I haven't had many problems since , hope this helps
I had a lip biopsy last week and it even helped sooth that but I am still numb
Good luck
Chris
Aloe vera toothpaste! I hadnt heard of that. Will look into it for sure. Hope you feel better after lip biopsy!
Hi! My doctor prescribed me with an oral gel that contained steroids. The warm salt water rinses and oragel weren't cutting it! The steroidal oral gel worked wonders and I could breathe, eat, drink, swallow, ect within a few hours. Maybe talk to your doctor about getting a steroidal oral gel. If it takes too long to get into your rheumy a primary care physician can prescribe or even a doctor at an urgent care clinic. Hope that helps! Feel better soon
I just use salt. It hurst to start with but it drawers them out and heals your skin. After a few seconds it's much better and far more bareable. I use sea salt and wash my mouth out with that or gargle with it if they're in my throat.
You can get aloe vera toothpaste and mouthwash from most good health food stores, just be aware that most of them don't contain fluoride.
I think the mouth ulcers are one of the worst things to cope with-so painful. I find that I have terribly bad breath when I get them too. I use Orabase which seals them. I shall certainly try some of the remedies mentioned above. I'm a teacher and constantly talking with a mouth full of ulcers is very difficult (on top of all the other SLE symptoms). I hope you get some respite soon-6 days is a long time to not eat properly. X
Amazing how many of us suffer from the same nasty little buggers huh. Talking with them is almost impossible sometimes and Im normally a chatterbox! Finally had something to eat today. Painful but so fulfilling. On the mend. Yay!
