Hi everyone,

I've had the flu going into 3 weeks now! Doctor refused to give me any medication last week. She said my chest was very mucuosy but sorry I can't give you anything. I have suffered so much and just feeling sorry for myself. I had Chest infection throat infection and sinus infection. The headaches are still there I'm still coughing up mucus and just feeling so fatigued. I just want to get better! Even climbing the stairs is making me so breathless. Tried all home remedies and pharmacy meds too. How much rest am i supposed to have and i have to work tomorrow. I already had a week off and can't let the family down anymore as I'm a nanny and they rely on me. You would think if i had lupusthe docs would prescribe me something to help me!

Rant over thanks for listening!

Docs can’t give you any thing for a virus.i you get a chest infection they will give you antibiotics because then you are dealing with bacteria .x

Hi Heda, Im surprised your physician didn’t prescribe you an antibiotic. Many times when influenza seems to be lingering is because you’ve developed a secondary bacterial infection. Physicians are only human and sometimes it’s only their best guess as to what’s going on. If your symptoms persist I’d be persistent in pursuing care. I hope you feel better soon! Xo Nan

I’m just trying to pick myself up after a month long virus - not flu as such but the cold from hell. I feel too tired to eat but even more tired if I don’t. My GP is quick to prescribe antibiotics but we’ve both been unsure if I need them. There’s a lot of nasty bugs out there ATM and they can take a long time to get over even for a healthy person. Obviously I can’t tell you if you need time or medication- or both but don’t be afraid to go back and get checked out again. Better safe than sorry. Feel better soon xx

If they could check for bacterial infection that would make sense to take antibiotics, otherwise for a virus as the person above said it wouldn't help. Only time rest electrolytes acetaminophen and such. Sorry that you are going through this. Please make sure to take a flu vaccine each year, that is the only thing that could help with flu.

Yes upto now I've never needed to take the flu vaccine but i will have to from next year.

I would go back to the doctor heda123, just to let them listen to your chest. You shouldn’t be that breathless dear and, although I’m sure it’s conpletelt fine, you don’t want it turning into pneumonia, which is what eventually happened to my Nan. Just a two day stay in hospital she was right as rain but still a palava getting her to stay in over night 😂

I’m so sorry you feel so rotten - we all had a flu-feeling cold even though Mum and I had the jab and it’s horrid. Just rest up as long as your body needs. Take care chicky 💖🌟

We all feel for you. It's the pits.

I had a nasty bug back in Nov. I knew I was tipping into chest infection when I had to take to my bed for 4 days. The first day I slept more or less for 24hrs. I managed to avoid a chest infection though as I recognized the symptoms having had one in 2012 and 2013. It took me 6 and 8 weeks respective to full recover from those. This time it took me 3 weeks to recover but I did the following and so I only felt absolute rubbish for about 10days.

1 rest rest rest - I know you are fed up with it but doc and pharmacist told me this is no 1

2 vitamin C

3 steam inhalation - 3 times a day equally spaced - nothing in the water

4 turmeric - this is a ancient cure that the Indian and Chinese have been using - and it really works big time for me. In fact I take it at the first sign of a cough. 1/4tsp turmeric + half a cup of hot whole fat milk. Then nothing to eat or drink for at least half an hour so that the mixture lines your throat etc.

5 stay hydrated

6 ginger tea - a slice of fresh ginger in hot water - this is soothing

I think this is an excellent reply. Only thing I would add is stay hydrated on non caffeine drinks, as these actually have a dehydrating effect.

And LOTS of vitamin C.

For me wheat containing products and dairy products seem to cause extra mucus.

And vitamin D seems to help stave off colds and flu. If you haven't been taking it, it might be worthwhile
