Can lupus affect your eyes?
Lupus eyes: Can lupus affect your eyes? - LUPUS UK
Lupus eyes
Yes, and often the effects are complicated by the activity of overlapping disorders like Sjogrens as well as by the side effects of the systemic prescription meds in our treatment plans. for instance:
Lupus & sjogrens inflammatory process began to affect my eyes in my early 30s. Despite conscientiously complying with NHS first line dry eye treatments for 3 years since I was FINALLY (GRRRR) referred to hospital eye clinic, my cornea specialist ophthalmologist has had to add fancy ciclosporin Ikervis immunosuppressant eye drops to my combined therapy eye treatments because my cornea inflammation had progressed & become more severe in a sinister manner. Luckily, I'm responding very well to these new drops. I'm 63 and my eyes feel a lot better than they have since my early 30s...
Many of us here are being treated for eye conditions related to our immune dysfunction & connective tissue disorder. And some of us have developed eye conditions due to our lupus meds. It's v important the condition of our eyes is monitored regularly

Hi Jensen_Lynne,
Around a third of lupus patients have some sort of eye related matter such as ‘dry eyes’. We published a factsheet on ‘LUPUS: The Mouth, Nose and Eyes’ which I hope will be of help to you: lupusuk.org.uk/wp-content/u...
IT CERTAINLY CAN I GET SMALL BLISTERS ON MY LOWER EYELIDS, CONSULTANT TOLD ME AT SALISBURY DISTRICT HOSPITAL THAT THIS WAS ANOTHER CONDITION CAUSED BY LUPUS
That's a big, unfortunate yes from me! 😣 Firstly I'm very light sensitive in my eyes both indoors and outdoors. Dark glasses are a must, brown lenses work best for me. Secondly Lupus attacks my eyes by way of Scleritis which is excruciatingly painful. The white layers of the eye become red and inflamed. This can thin the sclera and lead to the eyeballs fluid leaking and loss of the eyes. This requires massive doses of steroids to help reduce inflammation and painkillers, lots of, for about 3 weeks in my case. Eyes flicker with pain and heard stream down if any light gets in the eyes, ALL light Inc from mirror reflection! I get also Iritis, swelling of the irises, less painful but can be serious. Another is viruses in my layers of cornea. Hope that helps. Scary stuff though. Wish I was allowed anti inflammatories but I'm not. 😣😢
Jensen_lynne have you been to get advice from a doctor yet? I hope so. x
