I had raised cholesterol due to pred - I was put on atorvastatin and within days could barely walk so stopped it. The cardiologist said I needn't take it or even try another - in a woman who has no cardiac history there is no evidence that statins reduce the risk of her having a first heart attack or stroke. If a woman has already had one then a statin will reduce the risk of a second. In men it works for first and repeat events. This was evidence that was not clear from the results the manufacturers published - they pooled it all so it made the benefits appear to apply to everyone, not just to less than 3/4 of the population.

I cut carbs drastically and my cholesterol improved a lot. I don't eat low fat products at all - they just come with a load of sugar to make them taste "better" (that's in quotes because I think they taste worse). Exercise, weight loss and reduced carbs all help reduce cholesterol - I don't eat loads of fat but I only use butter and olive oil and mainly lean meat and oily fish.

I was on statins for years, different ones over the years, but they all caused problems with my liver. I started on Slimming World which is healthy eating and stopped taking the Statins. My Cholesterol is down to normal.

My cholesterol used to be very high at one point 9.7. I believe you will be better off eating healthy than taking Statins as they can cause a lot of problems

High Cholesterol get your VitD checked as low VitD is one thing that gives you high Cholesterol levels but take some anyway

Plus statins don't work full stop just give you more problems/illnesses

Hi oscarbravo,

Statins may not be effective for everybody, but they can be an important treatment for those particularly at risk of cardiovascular disease (which can be many lupus patients). If you experience bad side effects from statins, we recommend that you discuss this with your doctor so that they can look at alternative types or make the decision about whether it is best to manage cholesterol in other ways.

Hi i know atleast eight people that got thrust on to statins and not one of them was better on them only worse!

High Cholesterol try Serrapeptase natural product made from silkworm

I know that works well as friends been on it and his friends out in Thailand take it and brought his C down plus BP.

My other friend got thrust on to Statins then they tried to give him very high dose but even before got that high was having problems with pain/arm and hes a Hairdresser so needs to move and use arms constantly but was in so much pain in the end stopped taking it.

But i know that VitD effects it as another person i know there C was raised each time went to Quacks it was higher they said eat no fat blahblah have Benecol! etc etc which they did then next time went had jumped from 5.4 to 8 odd went to hospital for tests after they had done asked if a new junior doctor could deal with her she said yes they did other tests found her vitD was low now boosted it's come down!

I'd like to advise caution and urge people to check with their doctors before trying any alternative/complementary treatment.

The long-term safety of serrapeptase is not known. In addition Serrapeptase might decrease blood clotting. Therefore, taking serrapeptase along with medications that also slow clotting might increase the chances of bruising and bleeding.
