Preparing for adjuvant chemo stage 3a lung cancer

Pet CT scan showed avid 4.5cm tumour in upper right lung and 2 lymph nodes hot. I've had mediastinoscopy to diagnose non small cell lung cancer in a mediastinal lymph node....then so grateful for successful surgery to remove top right lobe and about 8 lymph nodes.

I am still in shock, 58, never smoked. But as I recover from surgery, got home yesterday (hospitals have covid covered), I want to prepare for the adjuvant chemo I have been told I need.

Reading lots about how likely recurrence is, so want to find out as much about what's happening now not 5 years ago. Not got any results from biopsy of main tumour yet. What can I usefully do?

Hi, your post resonated with me as last November I was diagnosed with NSCLC at 48 having never smoked. I had surgery in December to remove my lower left lobe and started adjuvant chemo end of Jan which was stopped after 2 sessions due to the peak of the covid pandemic as the risk of me being hospitalised (as I was with neutropenia after cycle 1), outweighed the benefits. I had my 6 month CT end of June which was thankfully clear, next one due December.

My advice would be to focus on recovering from your surgery; breathing exercises, keeping active without pushing yourself too much, eating healthily and drinking lots of water. This will help prepare your body for the chemo. Do you know yet which chemo drugs you’ll have?

Recurrence is a constant worry to me too and it’s scary when you read various stats but as you say lots are years out of date. I’ve found this forum and the CRUK site very helpful and there are lots of positive and informative posts as well as sad ones.

If you have any questions that I can help with please feel free to message me.

Best wishes

Ruth

Hi,

It is understandable your are still shocked by your diagnosis but good that you are now home following your surgery.

I have attached a “My lung surgery booklet” which gives you good post operative advice.I have also attached a “chemotherapy booklet” which might answer any questions you may have relating to your forthcoming treatments.
