Yesterday I picked these blackberries from brambles growing wild in my hedgerow so I didn't have far to walk. Blackberries are synonymous with Autumn in the UK and will be in fruit for a little while yet.
Wild blackberries from brambles have much more flavour than shop bought ones in my opinion even if they are a little smaller and I have to confess that I ate some while picking them but thats all part of it as you cant get fresher than that!
Here's an article on the health benefits of blackberries, please see:
They are packed with vitamins and nutrients like vitamin C and vitamin K plus magnesium which we all need so its well worth putting some gloves on going for a walk and picking some especially in this nice early autumn weather.
I have some home grown Bramley apples from a neighbour our so will be baking something with the magic combo of Bramley apples and blackberries real soon.
Lastly enjoy the lovely weather in the UK folks. ๐
So beautiful, Jerry. Iโm jealous. I love berries. By the time they arrive here in the US from wherever, theyโre usually mushy. ๐Youโre so lucky!
They look lovely Jerry, we've had a large dish full from wild ones growing around us. Last year hubby made bramble jelly with what he picked and it was delicious - nature's gift (but maybe intended for the birds ๐ค). ๐
Thank s springcross and bramble jelly does sound good so well done to hubby. ๐
Those look delicious Jerry and for me it's always a bitter-sweet moment when blackberries are ripe and ready for picking. It makes me think of the days when mum and I would hunt the hedgerows for this wonderful treasure which was then made into the most more-ish pies and crumbles. But also bitter-sweet because these berries herald a change in the season. The end of summer is coming fast and turning my thoughts to falling leaves, fat ears of golden wheat and for some strange reason, field mice! ๐ญ๐ญ

Thank you Sue, you have a wide perception as your reply is charming as you are so right the nights are drawing in and the trees/crops are getting ready for winter but itโs the light the colours and the air feels fresher in the autumn I think which I really like. And Iโm an October child so maybe that comes into it. Itโs funny you mention field mice as I purposely leave the one close to the ground for them as they are becoming endangered. ๐ญ๐

How lovely Jerry! I might have known that you'd be thinking of our wild creatures too!! ๐๐๐ญ๐
We have a few delightful little field mice in our garden that dart out to get seeds that drop from the bird feeders. If you blink you miss them. Always makes me smile.
They look lovely Jerry, and very healthy. Thank you for posting the link - so many benefits to eating them. Looking forward to seeing your Apple and Blackberry creation ๐
I picked quite a few on one of my riverside walks about 4 weeks ago. The hot weather had obviously ripened them early . They're now in the freezer waiting for me to enjoy them later.
Hi MadBunny picking blackberries by the river sounds really nice to me. Iโm sure about how much sun they get as they fruit for a while. So you enjoy your frozen ones. ๐
I always thought of picking blackberries in August and remember a friend saying the last week in August was blackberry picking week and I thought that was neat. These are mine and they're in full sun now but are sheltered from the sun a lot because of trees so its a very sheltered corner and you can see theres plenty more to come as I've just taken this photo.
That's a great idea for a fruit salad and adding the blackberries into it. We were going to have a fruit salad last night as a dessert, but we just had strawberries and peaches/grapes. We will have to see when we can get more blackberries later this week-- or weekend.
I also picked a large amount from the field behind my garden at the weekend. We have Bramleys growing in the garden to make crumbles. They are great to eat raw when going for long walks in the fields. ๐๐
This sounds good to me China-trekker as you donโt have to go far pick the blackberryโs and growing your own Bramley apples is even better.
And youโre right blackberryโs are thirst quenching when out walking and theyโre in season. I buy a big bag of grapes for long car journeys for the same reason. ๐๐
I totally agree! We started growing basic vegetables and blackberries years ago with our children and thereโs no greater pleasure than spending time picking and eating them fresh with the kids! Iโd love to expand our planting area to grow more fruits. Love knowing where our fruit and veg comes from
Hey good for you for encouraging your children to spend time picking fruit I used to go blackberry picking with my son. And youโre so right about knowing our foods journey to our plates. Making homegrown the best. ๐
There seem to be lots around here too atm. Both me and my dog dine on them liberally whenever we go for walks. My dog points them out and then waits until a few are picked and dropped into her mouth ๐
