It’s been a long time since I posted. I was wondering what to do when you have flashbacks and how to stop thinking about it.
Bad memories: It’s been a long time since I... - Heal My PTSD
Bad memories
Hi. I can recommend EMDR therapy. It reprocesses trauma and changes where it is stored in the brain. This is the key to its power as a therapy. You would need to find a therapist who is trained and experienced in trauma focused therapy as standard therapy can make things worse. EMDR has changed my life.
Best wishes. 🌼
I try to think of something else, like somewhere you Dream of being! I have also done stupid things when it gets so bad I actually feel the physical pain it's not just flashbacks! I think sometimes it's good to talk to your GP, I now have a great GP who doesn't believe in medication for PTSD unless it's really needed, I know I can talk to him and he Listens! That in itself helps! I refuse to see a Counsellor or psychiatrist as when I did once they made my bad times worse, but each to their own. I would if necessary try talking to one if you haven't before now as they do have success with some people.
Grounding techniques might help a bit, like using 5 senses: what you can:
See
Hear
Smell
Touch
Taste
Other things like holding ice blocks in your hands can bring you out of that flashback.
Maybe a walk outside.
I try to solve puzzles on my phone to engage the thinking part of my brain, concentrate on something else.
None of this works 100% but if you try different things, eventually something will help.
I hope those flashbacks will stop soon. Had them yesterday, thankfully not today.
Sending support...
