I`d like to start going back to the g... - Fibromyalgia Acti...
I`d like to start going back to the gym - any hints on the best type of workout? ThanxxxI
Hi
If the Gym has stairs then that would be me done in before getting into the gym, at least I would save the fee.
Take care and kindest regards
Terry
HI Terry,
gentle Stretching exercising would be best for fibro, very light weights and then building up slowly. Dont over do it. The best approaches are low-impact with stretching, swimming, tai chi, yoga or Pilates. These types of exercises are important because they keep muscles powerful and flexible.
Good luck with it,
xx shelley
thanx for your reply, will try one of these and see how it goesx
a good idea is to find a gym with a spa - then you can do as much as you can in the gym, the instructors should help you get it right, and you can gradually build it up, but if you can go into the hot tub or sauna afterwards it helps to stop your muscles aching. We have one in our village in Somerset and it is only £15 a month and they have a lot of fibro people there and it really works for them.
It's best to get expert advice as we cannot know if you have anything that may affect what exercise is safe and appropriate for you. A physio referral is actually a good idea if you haven't been exercising regularly - they can check you for hypermobility, myofascial trigger points, etc.
Aqua aerobics hun, you don't feel pain whilst ur doing it, its next day when you hurt lol x
My brother and Sister in law (she is a GP) bought me a cross trainer for my birthday (at my request) as it is a no impact exerciser. I can barely walk to get on the thing but I have managed to get up to 20 mins a day over the past 3 months which is a wopping 7km!! Again when I get off the pain is still there when walking, but is the same when exercising. I am losing my belly which is brilliant and my heart and lungs are getting their workout. However, the exercise hasn't helped me with sleeping and has had no effect on the pain like the GP's tell you it will. I know I need to continue with it, but it definately isn't a cure for FMS!!
Soft hugs to all.
Thanks for your reply - I think you`ve done really well and, for me, exercise helps my mood a lot, as well as getting rid of my spare tyre, which, as you say, i`m sure helps a lot in coping with this thing. I am really interested to know that the pain is the same when exercising, so I know what to expect. . I don`t sleep either, its such a nuisance isn`t it - I`ve only recently been diagnosed so i`m reliant on domestic painkillers till I get to the hosp next week, but then i don`t wake up till really late which annoys me too. However, a neighbour has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness so i`m grateful to be alive, even if not necessarily kicking!
Best wishes xx
