No not really, they just make it bearable, so take a bit of the

Pain away

I personally think if you have the right level of pain relief it can work, of course this is dependent on your level of pain and your other symptoms too.

When my pain gets really bad, I find taking two 750mg Methocarbamol tablets really help and within one hour my pain is bearable and I can manage it again.

I don't find normal doses of Paracetamol or Ibuprofen work at all. My normal pain is relieved by taking Co-Codamol. I have been down the Tramadol route and that didn't help me at all, it's all a bit hit and miss until we find the right combination or pain relief. :)

i agree LibertyZ i take a mixture of Tramadol, Supadol and use Febenec Gel when I get localised pain (usually during the night in my knees), none of them stop the pain but make it bearable so I can function again. Trouble is so many of the pain meds just make me feel like a zombie :(

Yes Trustingtiddles that's another one of the problems we face. We need sufficient pain relief without feeling spaced out. I take Methocarbamol, 2 x 750mg tablets, but I have to be careful where and when I take it as I feel so "floaty" with it. I wouldn't risk taking it if I were out, I would end up getting arrested for acting like a drunk lol! ;)

Lol I know that feeling! I'm sure had I been stopped on the way to work several times before getting my meds to suit me I would have been done for being drunk or stoned. Thankfully these days I take very few pain meds compared to when I was first diagnosed just wish I knew how to stop the red hot pokers that go through my knees during the night lol

You can find more information on the use of painkillers for Fibro on the FibroAction website

fibroaction.org/Pages/Analg...

I recommend you read the entire treatments section of which the analgesics is a subcategory

Yes and No... Paracetamol and Brufen combination work best for me,but be careful with Brufen if you have stomache problems or kidney problems which I do but sometimes I just have to take them together to ease the aching pain, Tramadol can be good but not all the timethe trouble is with Fibro it can present with differant types of pain which you can experience together or at differant times each requiring differant types of pain relief. I find for myself if I get overtired, stressed the Fibro is much worse sometimes a warm bath, hotwater bottles getting to bed early help a lot as do warm weather sunshine and eating healthy regular meals. It really is a matter of trial and error finding the best way of coping

HI - I AGREE WITH YOU RE FIBRO BEING DIFFERENT AT INTERVALS.

GOOD WEBSITE IS SCIENCE DAILY - INTERESTING ARTICLE RECENTLY SUGGESTING THAT IT MAY BE A CENTRAL NERVOUS ILLNESS. GOOD THAT FOLKS ARE INVESTIGATING. LIKE YOU - I FIND THAT STRESS CAN BRING IT ON BIG TIME. I HAVE A GOOD DOC WHO IS PRETTY HELFULL. HE PRESCRIBES AMYTRIPTOLINE WHICH HELPS ME GET SOME SLEEP AND WHEN I GET JUMPY LEGS I CAN TAKEA DIAZAPAM (USED WITH GREAT CAUTION THOUGH).

I don't find they help to be honest , the side effects are worse than the benefits in my opinion i only take Tramadol with paracetamol when muscle spasms cause trapped nerves and pain is at its worse. but i found hot wheat bags, massage and yoga are better.

But i also found you need to find what works for you, so try everything and anything because you never know what will help till you try it.

good luck x

Well iam on butrans pain patches 20mg and also 8/10 co codamol a day 10 if i am badalthiuygh makes not alot of difference with all this it just takes the edge off by the time it does that you are ready to take next lot so i am never pain free but maybe one day i will be we all will be love to you diddle x

If you get the correct meds yes they do and that is the thing getting the right drug and the correct dosage. I was using BuTrans patches and they were fantastic, but after 12 month I started to have a reaction to them. I was itching really bad with them and they caused like burn marks on my skin. So I had to come off them. Tried 3 different patches of Fentanyl and now it's under control, so I am now on 50 mg but feeling a bit spaced out but yeah no pain! I do have arthritis and still have a dull ache there but even that pain has been reduced!

for me yes they do! they mask the pain by about 50%, i could take stronger meds but my choice not to as i need to be able to drive and cook etc! My nightime meds help me sleep, i always get about 9 hrs! if i dont take them i dont sleep!

Thank you everyone for your responses. It does seem to be trial and error to find the right combination - also the side effects are a concern. It is interesting that we experience so many different types of pain at different times and levels. x

I have to say sometimes I suffer the pain, than going up the analgesia ladder and suffering the horrendous side effects that can and do occur,I agree with Irenegee massage and gentle excercise is very good, the trouble is with opiod painkillers you often find that stronger doses have to be given after a time as the body gets used to the levels its given, and pain tolerance decreases then the viscious circle begins in having to cope with nausea, constipation, spaced out feelings more fatigue. so on and so on, Its certainely a long journey finding out what is best for yourself to say the least one lives in hope all the time x
