Does anybody know about safe antidepressants for sensitive fibro sufferers.

I'm going to go to the Dr's to ask about my very low state of mind, as Dr's seem to be at there happiest handing out tablets I dont go very often and I've had bad experience's with antidepressants and with low dose as a painkiller amitriptyline and Dosulepin and although they really helped the side effect were horrendous, I think something that help serotonin levels but I'm not sure what the latest recomended medication is considered affective for FM. I would just like to be educated before going to the Dr because in general they are not too familiar to FM. :-)

Hi BlueBunny, I have been taking citalopram antidepressant for about 3 years following a severe episode of depression. I also know this to be a drug that can help with pain. Depression is a common feature of FM - so I am led to believe because of the low levels of serotonin which is the hormone that makes us feel good about ourselves. so you low mood is nothing that should question - it is what it is, and it is far better to get some chemical support - I only say from experience - I was in denial about my depression for around 2 years - and i was reluctant to take antidepressants. However, I haven't looked back and will continue to take them as the definitely help my pain to be less intense. The tablets are 10mg, and that is a low dose, so usually the Dr starts you on the low dose and go back if it doesn't make much of a difference to increase the dose. Good Luck with it all - lots of soft and gentle hugs and support. *{}* :-) sparkles to you x

Hi BlueBunny, I am now taking Duloxetine which is meant to help with the fibro as well as the depression. I tried Citalopram but didnt find it did me any good so then went onto Fluoxetine for a few years but was swapped to Duloxetine after I had a referral to a psychiatric nurse. Everyone is so different though as you can see and what suits one doesn't suit another so have a chat to the doctor and see what they advise. Sometimes you have to try more than one lot of medication to see what works best for you xx

well good luck with that i am sure they will help you i am on 40 mg citralopram and i am still a miserable depressed diddle lol (only joking) but serouiusly i hope that they do help you but i have hada couple of other ones before this onwe it is trial and error but good luck love to you diddle x

Hi BlueBunny,

Both amitriptyline and Dosulepin are anti-depressants and from personal experience I know how amitriptyline can turn you into a zombie. It's usually used in Fibro as a muscle relaxant and to help you sleep. It certainly did that, but I think the dose was just too high for me at 25mg.

I believe the currently recommended anti-depressant for Fibro is Duloxetine, although I prefer Venlafaxine, they work in the same way.

What ever you are prescribed, you have to remember, that most effects in the first week of taking a new medication, are just your system getting used to the new drug and most subside, It's only the ones that persist after a week, that can truly be regarded as side effects.

best of luck and happy hugs, kate :)

Hi, I am very sensitive to drugs and amitriptyline had me sitting in a corner, rocking backwards and forwards and only able to see black - and that was on the lowest dose. The Dr changed my anti-depressants to Duloxetine, which also act as a painkiller, and I have had no problems since. I am not saying that Duloxetine is right for you but it is working for me. Shell x
