I said to my Hubby in the GP's office yesterday because of my weight and mobility, My 3 major illnesses are Thyroid under active, Menapause (Grrr ) AND Fibro in each of these rotten beggars is,
I meant that I'm very over weight because I have very little mobility, So I have gained a lot of weight because I can't move enough to shed any weight π
I would love to swim but my social anxiety stops me going out at the best of timesπββοΈ so to be inside with people around me would tip me over the edge
Hah! Totally agree I have all 3 plus inflammatory arthritis, and chronic fatigue. Some necessary medications side effects are also weight gain. Oh good...Gone from running an hour every day to a 20 minute slow walk - with rest breaks! Total lack of ability to exercise enough, yet still try to eat healthy. I have to add in my own π .for the hormonal side...
I totally understand!! I use to not be able to gain weight after chemotherapy years ago but since I started taking these different medications that make you gain weight & not being able to walk fast like I did several years ago because Iβm afraid of the risk of falling again ( sorta off balance) Itβs hard going up my stairs with groceries now. Iβm sure youβre doing your best Deb. Sending a hug π€ π¦
Hi Debsdelight, have you tried exercise in the water, I have been going to an exercise class for people with all types of arthritis based in a swimming pool, it's amazing how much you can move in the water. Also seated exercise might be helpful, there are usually ways to do some exercise even if its just a walk down the road and back. I don't think being disabled automatically means being over weight, what we eat also makes a difference. I struggled with my weight most of my life but after seeing my respiratory consultant who told me because I had gained weight it was making my lungs worse, I got the kick up my bum I needed and lost weight, the next appointment I had with him I said thank you. Sometimes we need some tough love otherwise we will never get any better. Also just to clarify, going through the menopause is just natural not an illness. I do wish you all the best.
Thank you for your reply, going to a swimming pool would be lovely and at the end of my road lives a gym and pool,The last time I tried I had a panic attack and had to leave before I even got through the door (thank you social anxiety)
I know the menopause is a natural process, but to me it's an illness, most of the symptoms I've had make me feel ill
Hot flushes and the chills, I thought I was getting the flu, Night sweats are so uncomfortable especially this time of year,
Hi Debsdelight, sorry to hear that you suffer from panic attacks it must be very hard for you, I do hope you get the support you need both mentally and physically. Thank you for asking about my leg, I have been told by my consultant it will never get better there is alot of fluid in my ankle which is that swollen I can only get a wide fitting trainer on that I loosen all the laces they won't drain the fluid because they are worried about causing another infection so I have been referred to genetic testing as the infection I had was so unusual. That's why I spend so much time in the swimming pool and it helps me alot, that is why I mentioned it to you. Sending hugs
when we have multiple health issues it needs a sympathetic and knowledgeable GP to work with us to try and improve the situation.
A referral to a mental health practitioner for help to overcome social anxiety would allow you to use the swimming pool. This would help with gentle exercise to assist weight loss, build muscle strength and improve mood.
I had a phobia of swimming pools but a private physio clinic used a local gymβs swimming pool for hydrotherapy. At first I just sat near the pool, the next time I put my feet in from the side, the next I got in and did exercises holding onto the side. Then with the aid of floating aids more exercises.
I lost my fear. I now go weekly in a group of three others, which is more affordable , and itβs social too and inspiring to see others with disabilities or recovering from surgery improve.
Addressing the underactive thyroid would help a number of issues including weight gain. Menopause may be natural but symptoms can be unpleasant so addressing these would help.
This in turn may help the fibromyalgia as gentle walks become possible.
Thatβs true for me as well & I suspect for millions of others with chronic illnesses. I just wish society and medical professionals would see it that way!
