I got a wet room installed when local council were upgrading our bathrooms.

First step would likely be to get a occupational therapy assessment to assess your need

Hello HazelThankyou for answering.

Are occupational ok to deal with do you know?

You contact them through your local social services department. They will come out and do a full assessment of all your needs, and often can supply aids to help you or recommend what to buy yourself.

I wonder if it's through the local council. I'll ring next week and find out.

I've had fibromyalgia since 2001 and I'm getting much worse. I worry I won't get any help.. because you can't see fibromyalgia.

Most areas you can self refer through your local council social services department. If its any different in your area, they will advise you what is required

I live in social housing and have a wet room, and I do wish I didn't. I long for a walk in bath as heat help with the pain and all the skin itching etc. if you still want one ask for occupational therapy. Or contact council direct they will help.

I’d far prefer just a walk in shower…a friend of mine paid herself to have a wet room installed & she hates it! I had one of the baths where I now live removed & a nice big shower installed…. I could place a seat in it if ever I needed to.

I applied for a disabled facility grant and was awarded it after occupational health did an assessment. I wasn't able to get in and out my bath for a really long time. The lady drew up a floor plan and I ended up with a really big walk in shower. My housing association didn't want me to have a wet room but agreed for the shower.

Oh my,

I hope this is what I'm getting (I have been approved for grant) Also if I get approved for the indoor wheelchair, They will be widening my front door and fixing a permanent ramp and rails up,

I’ve been in my housing association bungalow for 15 years and asked if I could have a walk in shower instead of my shower over the bath which I struggle to get in due to hip pain. They said I had to have an OT assessment and my GP referred me in October last year, I’ve had a phone assessment, now just waiting for the physical assessment… I’ve just been awarded PIP as things have got worse for me in the last year or two.. eventually I’m hoping to see OT and decided to ask for a walk in bath/shower as it would still be lovely to have a bath when the pain is bad. Good luck.

Hello Bertjolly, You should get on the phone asap,There is such a long waiting list for the OT to come to your home,I was approved to have a wet room or walk-in shower with the doors,I'm waiting for the approval to get the front door widened,

I've been told it will be done about 9 month wait,

Good luck with yours

Take care Debs

My home is private rented,

Hey deb's. Thanks so much for your reply too.

I'm pleased to hear you've been approved 😀

8 month wait! Dear lord.

So I ring the council?

I don't use a wheelchair etc. It's basically getting in and out of the bath and hair washing.

My partner helps but being honest, I want to do my personal stuff myself.

I keep thinking the OH won't believe the pain i have. X

Yes! Ring your council today! These people are here to help and live better in our homes,

Maybe ask for a couple of steps for the bath, I have the one with the bar on so I feel a little safer, (If you're able) Sorry, I have forgotten what they are called😕

I have got one of those plank things that go across the actual bath to sit on,

I'm really sorry, I have been getting worse as the day goes by with the dreaded brain fog,😫

Your OH will be able to give these things to you in the mean time until your grant will be accepted, Our landlord is a good man and as long as we are his tenants, he'll agree to any changes the house needs ( A toilet upstairs would be nice) I cant get in the actual bath at the moment so Hubby helps with my hair but like you, There are things that I would like to wash myself, He helped with something when I had, Lets just call it really crap, I've vowed never to ask him to do that ever, ever again,

We had someone come by to install a type of tap, shower on the end but not getting a lot of hot water come through at the moment and I can only stand upright for a very short time, so out come the buckets and the jugs to rinse off, (A lovely memory just came back then, My Nana's house, When showers, central heating and a toilet indoors were a luxury😀)

Sorry i do tend to waffle on a bit,

Hope you have a nice evening and try not to worry too much about the OT, I'm sure everything will work out (((((gentle hugs)))))

Waffle away debs haha. I love a waffle too.

Love memories especially of our grandparents, comforting aren't they.

The thing is ww haven't got a proper shower. It's the tap converter shower and it's terrible.

I think its going to be a waste of time.. steps etc.

I..like everyone wants a proper shower

I don't just have fibromyalgia.

Many years ago I had a industrial work injury (I was trapped under a forklift and bench etc.

I also have scoliosis.

There you go debs I waffled too x

Hi, I moved in 2021 from a first floor (no lift) Council flat, to a ground floor flat with a wet room complete with a shower seat, there are also grab rails in the room and at the front and back doors. The wet room had been installed for the previous tenants. I do miss my baths (a nice soak in Epsom Salts bath, but it is so much easier with the shower seat and the grab rails help too. I think that the Council would have converted my bathroom to a wet room at our previous flat, but we needed to move to a ground floor flat because the stairs were becoming more and more difficult to climb, especially when carrying groceries etc. Hope you do get your wet room without too much bother if that's what you decide is what you want.

Hello Thankyou for replying.

I do want it. Its got to the point now where i struggle, but I'm anxious about the OH believing me. But my medical notes show.

I'm sure that OH will believe you, you just have to tell them exactly how you are affected by your conditions. They are there to help you, not to make things difficult for you.

hey there

Yes I have had a wet room fitted. I have had Fibro for four to five years diagnosed, possibly longer undiagnosed. I am unable to walk as my foot is in permanent spasm and my hips and shoulders are incredibly bad. My foot is diagnosed as CRPS but I’m being told that it connected to the Fibro by various doctors. In order to get assistance you need to contact Adult Social Services and be referred to an Occupational Therapist who will assess your safety. There is also another way via the home accident prevent team. They may have another name but they come in to ensure that you aren’t at risk of going into hospital from a fall. This team will also refer you to the OT at adult social care. What the OT will do is help to assess what you need, not just for now but also in the future. We tend to always think of the now and not the future. They will see how you are moving. And what helps you most. I have a very special shower chair rather than a stool due to my foot. This is after I bought a stool which was making things a lot worse.

HelloThankyou so much for messaging.

Wow you told me some good things there.

I'm sorry to hear your foot is so bad for you and hinders you walking. You must be in awful pain.

My walking isn't to bad , my fibro which I've had for 23 years is much more in my neck land shoulders, also the base of my head.

My hips are really painful and trying to get in and out of the bath is not great.

Will the OH expect me to show them?
