Hi there, I assume you're having work done by a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Local Authority puts work out to tender usually. Don't think money comes straight to you? Presume an OT (Occupational Therapist) was involved who could advise.

Hi there,I also had a grant for my walk in shower,I had the choice of arranging a company to fit it or the council.. I decided the council because if u get any problems then they will come out & fix it... If I went private then when the warranty runs out you have to cover the costs yourself

.... As for what choice you get when choosing what you want you do have some say on the floor covering, lots of different colours to choose from,if u need extra handrails etc... My shower was set out so that when a carer showers me they stood behind a half sized plastic board & I can close the curtain if I am on my own.... I love my new shower room but you will have to paint it yourself if you want colours in the room.... Sorry if this seemed long winded lol xx

hi we had this for my husband. we had to be referred by the OT who then came out with the disabled faculties grant man who looked at the bathroom and designed it to my husbands health needs. we then when the grant had gone through had to get 2 quotes, we chose one private and our housing association contractors. they come and give you a quote to the specs laid down by the DFG man. we then had to submit both quotes and the DFG chooses the cheapest, we then had the choice of using the cheapest or the other one but if we used the other we would have to pay the difference. when the work is complete the DFG man will come and inspect and sign it off and pay the contractors directly. we shoes our tiles, paint work, floor and curtain colours and the colours of the hind rails.

we had to show we were getting benefits. either DLA, ESA housing or council tax. but check with your local council what their criteria is

Ring your council ask their criteria is a first start they may say ring social services or they may do for you

An occ therapist came out it took nearly a year though.

If we wanted anything different we could pay the difference tiles radiators etc.

Hi jacksie

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you can be today? I think that you have been given quite a lot of good advice. I just wanted to say that if I were you I would ring around the local council, social services, grant providers etc.

I sincerely hope that you can achieve your goal of getting a wet room.

Ken

thanks for the response.i am in a right dilemma leaving it up to the council ,i thought i would have the best builders and good products after all my bathroom is only 8feet by 6feet as you can see tiny but could have been very compact and nice.i since found out it could have been designed better the way it is the shower head is facing the landing door,i asked him he said he would let me have a shower screen,ok but what about the bad workmanship leaving pipes showing, also the floor is uneven, they said they would probably take floor up and put it back down again, the council chap came with the builder and agreed,my argument is why was it done shoddily and designed badly by council chap it all stinks,it's been 4 weeks now still not finished.jacksie.

i had a grant from the local council and the money was paid to the building company in stages once that stage of work had been completed. I had to find some funds myself as was having more done than a wet room. We designed all of the work required with an independent architect as long as it meets your needs then they will accept it - or they did 5yrs ago when mine was built

I'm a social worker in lincolnshire before you get the Disabled Facilities Grant you must be of substantial or critical eligibility. You must have exhausted all other options such has equipment and support. An occupational therapist puts the request through but it takes 12-18 months. It's not a fast process. You can talk to the council about choosing a builders but they must also agree, they will then manage the finances with the grant and talk to you about your contribution if there is one. Hope this helps.

I'm in strathmiglo in scotland, can I get help to get a walk in shower put in as I'm having problems now getting in and out the bath as my shower is in the bath so I have to step in the bath first to have a shower, and when the council did our house up 30 years ago, my husband wanted the bath, put in, an in the past years the council put a shower in the bath for me and I'm now needing to have the bath taken away as Im having problems, getting in and out the bath when they did up the house 30 years ago, they cut our toilet in half and I can't buy a bath step as there's no room to stick it, I'm riddled with arthritis, and got fibromyalgia which was tested at the pain clinic 20 years ago, I've got spine arthritis and bursitis, and liver problems could anyone give me advice the housing officer is coming out to let me know if U can get the bath taken out and a new toilet fitted what advice would anyone give thank you xxxxxx

Hi Jacksie. How are you going with your request? i too would like a wet room put into the cupboard of an existing outside loo and I would construct a covered walkway to get there from my back door. I cant walk very far in the mornings until I 'thaw out' especially upstairs is a no go area. Ive moved into a house with a downstairs dining room which is where I sleep. I can go for a wee in my bedroom in a commode but am double incontinent and need access to toilet. I would like a 'sit in' shower/bath because water helps my body relax and I come out of my frozen state much sooner than if I just lie there. I would like at least some help from the council as I find work difficult because of my condition. I get enhanced PIP and DLA component of WTC. Undiagnosed so far. I have Aspergers which is often accompanied by fibrotype/gastro complications. Mendip Council, Somerset.
