I use just the basic magnesium. You can get it at local supermarkets or dedicated health shops. I have been using Magnesium for years,

Hope it works for you

Thank you Lesley, my sister takes it as well but said to get a certain one without fillers, I think it was the glycerate one, I was just wondering what others had taken that worked for them. I'm taking amitriptyline at the moment but it makes me really tired so would prefer something more natural x

I take Magnesium Citrate. Apparently most of the other types are good too, just avoid Magnesium Oxide it's pointless taking bc it's not bioavailable, according to husband and Pubmed 😁.

Thank you Cat, I will look into that one then x

There is a reason Magnesium Oxide is the cheapest that's why if it doesn't say which one it is or if its especially cheap I wouldnt buy it. Magnesium Glycinate and Citrate seem to be good though.

Yes, I know the cheap ones won't be as good nor the ones with fillers. I remember buying some glycinate ones actually last October, 3 months worth from Amazon but must have had them all as I can't find the tub now. I must admit I tend to get these things, take some then fizzle out, so need to make sure I take them as the amitriptyline I've just started taking again are making me even more tired, though helping the pain a little, it's weighing up the lesser of 2 evils. I'll get some more of those kind I think then come off the amitrip x

To be honest I am supposed to take Magnesium for Chronic Migraines and Fibromyalgia the only way I remember to take them is because my husband shoves them in my face and to be perfectly frank I don't think they make any difference to either of those conditions but it makes my husband happy 😁 .I've been on Amitriptyline for a decade or so. I presume you take them early evening, can make a big difference to morning grogginess? Generally the tiredness wears off after 6 weeks anyway unless you ate changing doses a lot. There is always Noratriptyline which is a newer version, I haven't tried it myself though.

Hi, I've found the magnesium now that I bought in October last year, quite a lot left so started taking them again now. I normally take the amitrip a couple of hours before I want to go to sleep so about 10pm and only remember because I have a daily alarm going off! Never heard of noratriptyline so will have a read about that one as well, thank you x

That's exactly what I do, if my miss alarm I basically don't sleep. Which is annoying but it's still better than I am without it. I take it at 8.30, I generally sleep around half 11. I'm not groggy in the morning but I'm always tired bc I don't sleep well even with it and pain levels are high in morning. 🤷

How many mg do you take?

Cat00 profile image
Cat00 in reply to karen0305

I'm currently on 100mg but over the years I've been 50mg to 150mg. I've had to come off it twice for pregnancy etc. The lowest dose has no effect on me.

OK, I started on 10mg last year then 20mg which seemed to be helping the pain a bit but made me groggy, I think the dose you are having would have me unconscious, you obviously have severe pain to warrant it. Thank you for your advice, I'll see how I get on with the low dose and magnesium.

Magnesium Glycinate and Malate are both good because they are active forms and more easily absorbed.I use Magnesium Glycinate 3 in 1 by Nutrition Geeks, it's available on Amazon.

It contains Magnesium Glycinate, Malate and Citrate. You only need one capsule a day ( although it suggests 1 or 2).

It is the cheapest best quality version of active Magnesium that I have found.

Just make sure you are safe to use it as if you have hypotension or take certain types of heart medications you may not be recommended to use it or need to be careful about timing the dose.

If you get insomnia , restless legs of night cramps it's very useful to take it a few hours before bed as long as you have normal blood pressure.

Hi, thank you, I have some magnesium glycinate now, just started taking them but had 2, maybe I'll start off with 2 then cut them down to one in a few weeks. I'll try the version you have said once these are done. Fortunately I don't have high blood pressure or take heart medication. Many thanks for your advice.

It's usually better to taper up rather than down so that your body can slowly get used to the chemical change. And to reduce the chance of any side effects .I'd suggest you take one a day for a few weeks then increase to two if you feel you need more.

You do also need to consider how much sodium and potassium you have in your diet when you increase magnesium to reduce the chance of it causing dizziness or changes in bowel action.

Magnesium changes your salt balance and can reduce your sodium and potassium levels. Adding a banana to your diet helps.

If you do increase to two space them out during the day and take them after food for better absorption and to have less effect on your salt balance.

Thanks for the advice, I'll take one a day then for now. It just says to take them with food, but I'll take them after a meal. I do like bananas fortunately and tend to eat 1 or 2 every day so will continue to do so 😁
