Hi all, Does anyone on here have regular access to hydrotherapy pool in their area and fibromyalgia support group face to face meeting not social media, or online support groups? I'm seriously thinking about relocating to another area of the country if I can find regular access to hydrotherapy and support group.

Cannot answer on hydrotherapy, but you can find a list of all FMA UK registered support groups at fmauk.org/groups

Hydrotherapy pools are more difficult to find than support groups unfortunately. Often the only ones in an area are based at a hospital and you have to be referred and in our area you normally only get six sessions. I've just had two sessions of a 6 session course and they are so beneficial.I know some Leisure centre have ones which are open to members of the public who have a medical condition that would benefit from the use of a pool so worth ringing around if there is an area you would be interested in moving to. . Some hotels have Hydrotherapy pools but unfortunately you normally have to pay for the general gymn membership even if you only want to use the Hydrotherapy pool which can be costly of you are on benefits.

Good luck in your search.

We have several hydrotherapy pools in Cambridge no idea about support groups though....

Hi Cat thanks for getting in touch, are you or anyone you know a regular user of the hydrotherapy pools in that area? Just wondered about cost and availability.

I've used 2 hydrotherapy pools in Cambridge, one at the Addebrookes hospital and one at the local Steiner school. The hospital was through the NHS and the second was swimming lessons for my daughter so I'm afraid I don't know how much they cost for private therapy. But there is quite a lot of availability that's for sure, although this was prepandemic so waiting lists would have been shorter.

There is an amazing one in Winchester Rob - at Winchester Sport and Leisure Park

I used to live in NE Wales and was sent to Gobowen Orthopaedic Hospital for a 3-week in-patient pain management programme. They had a therapy pool. It was too far away for me to use regularly, but people could access it regularly with a recommendation from their GP.

It's a beautiful area, too!

Good luck with the move,

Best wishes,

dee

I downsized and moved to a more gentle climate on the shores of Strangford Lough. I used some of the equity to treat myself to my own 'therapy pool' (a hot tub) but am often too weak to feel safe using it.

I realised how ill I was (my GP hadn't told me his diagnosis was Fibro?!?) when I started shivering in the Therapy Pool because, to me, the 32 degrees C felt cold.... Ho hum.

I wish you well and hope you find the support you need.

Kind regards, and gentle hugs,

dee

Hi Dee thanks for getting in touch, yeah allot of people have advised me to get a hot tub but what they don't understand is they are the easiest things to get in and out of at the best of time for me, not to mention the running cost of one these days cost a fortune to keep it at the temperature you need to have any benefits it and it's a big up keep involved to so I decided not to get one!

Hi Rob... it's something I'd certainly like to try, but there's nothing near my area.. the only swimming for ladies is at a school but times have been changed 7.30 p.m. to 6.30 a.m.!

Is it something you can get a referral for if there's one near you... pool that is, not hot tub.

xx

Yeah normal pools aren't the best if if just exercise you want to do with everyone whizzing up down and the water is colder so can make pain worse. Hydrotherapy definitely help me just gentle physio exercise in that hotter water helps with pain😊

I was looking for one, hoping the brand new city swimming pools would have one, but no. So thought about seeing if I could find a pool that allowed me to go daily for just 10 mins…. Not at £5.80 a time! So resorted to joining a hotel leisure centre, about 15 mins drive away, with nice pool that is not too cold, big jacuzzi, steam and sauna rooms. After 6 weeks I have built up to 30 mins daily 5/6 times a week, so less than £2 per session. I still need my long hot bath at home daily too sadly, so not saving on the pool’s showers! Many years ago used to do water aerobics where learnt movements in water, so do much of this rather than swimming proper ( which is bad for neck/spine)… jumps, skips etc.

Hi there Judith thanks for getting in touch. Yeah hydrotherapy pool don't come cheap unfortunately as they are costly to run and maintaine. £5.80 is not to bad if it just once a week you are going, some place are charging up to £15 a session! Can I ask what area you are in and is the hydrotherapy pool open during the day time?Best wishes

Rob . ,🙂

hi, I’m really lucky to have access to a hydrotherapy pool at a local retirement home/complex. I first found out about it when my son was referred for some physio. They do a weekly hydro for fibro class. It’s in Chippenham in Wiltshire if that helps at all. It is £13 a session though.
