Dry mouth
Hi, Have you got the post Covid stuffed up nose and sinuses? If so, could it be the mouth breathing over night? Any recent weight gain around the neck, especially if you were treated with steroids for Covid?
I was treated with antibiotics. I believe it is linked to covid. Thanks you for responding
Hi, I suffer with a dry mouth but i think mine is due to my medication for Fibromyalgia. I also have regular appointments with MaxilloFacial due to ulcers. When he saw my dry mouth they gave me some testers to try, creams and sprays. The one that works for me is Oralive (I think ) . I also keep a drink of juice next to my bed.
Maybe ask your GP for some samples or a recommendation as what might suit you.
I hope you get it sorted
Adèle 😊
Thank you. Will post an update here .
Hi I suffer with a dry mouth, but it's due to the medication I take, 1 inhaler I use for COPD and Amitriptyline for Fibromyalgia. I've always got a glass of water with me, and I take a bottle of water if I'm going out, and I suck sugar free mints or chew sugar free gum to try and keep my mouth wet.
Thanks so much. I do take antidepressants as well. I have had radiotherapy in the past and my dentist believes my saliva glands might have been damaged. I will try the tips you have shared.
I get dry mouth a lot - I think it’s linked to medication, so I just try to keep hydrated 💙
I drink over 3 litres of water day. I think it is the medication
Hi. Amitriptylin for Fibromyalgia do causes dry mouth and incontinence meds as well.
This maybe caused by something entirely different, diabetes is the cause of my problem, especially if blood sugars are on the higher side.
I am not diabetic. I am going to have the test next week
I have dry mouth all the time but mine is due to Amytriptyline and co codamol
My mouth is as dry as the Sahara desert most morning I brush my teeth when I get up with out toothpaste think it more to do with sleeping with my mouth open and sometimes I snore like a trooper 🤣 poor hubby he has ear plugs 😂 I have got used to it some times I just lay in bed on waking and do mouth exercise wiggle my tung and move my lips seem to help and I don’t have a cupa tea first I have warm boiled water.
Hi, I had COVID the previous month and noticed the same thing. My mouth is dry, especially during the night and when I wake up in the morning.
I too suffer with a dry mouth. I take amitriptyline and I think this is the culprit. I use toothpaste with sodium bicarbonate, a mouthwash and constantly sip water.
I will give it a try
I gave up drinking tea which has helped, I boil up about 6 Bay leaves then dilute it in a large jug of water and brink that. It's very pleasant, nicer than our tap water!! Also I chew sugar free gum.
I will try that. Thanks. I have been drinking moringa tea. I make a large jar in the morning and keep adding warm water.
i have recently started getting dry mouth worse at night, have fibromyalgia and take duloxetine not sure what the reason but have rubbish at the back of my throat and sleep with mouth open as cannot nose breathe not good!
Exactly what I am experiencing.
I read a tip ages ago to suck cubes of fresh pineapple as there's an enzyme that encourages saliva production. I found it worked really well but unfortunately I can't have much raw pineapple without getting terrible indigestion. You can freeze the pineapple once cubed and eat them from frozen if you don't want to wait to defrost them.
I have had dry mouth in the past week, but I think it was due to my sinus problems also blurry vision an headache
HiI have dry mouth. I haven't had covid-19 as yet. I do take a lot of meds which along with my many conditions are the culprits!! Hope you get sorted soon xxxx
Hi there, I was recently means tested to be referred to a fibromyalgia specialist and 1 of the questions that was asked, about having a dry mouth
Hi. I have dry mouth and eyes but I've not had covid. I've got an auto immune disease called sjögren's syndrome. I use special tablets which are only xylodol called XyliMelts. They stick to your gum and help to produce saliva. They last a few hours and are safe to have in your mouth when sleeping.
Sadly they are not on prescription. They are NOT medication. Used on cancer wards too..
Hi Glad to hear that Xylimelts help. My dental hygenist recommended them, but I haven't tried them yet......Now I will😀
Thanks for this! I had difficulty finding it first, as the substance is actually called xylitol. That's also what my daytime chewing gum is made of, a sugar ("birch sugar" they call it here) which is good for the teeth, recommended similar to Geriinaz by my dental hygienist, been using those for years, but she never mentioned XyliMelts. Same as my (German) Xylitol-gum you can get XyliMelts without mint, which would acidify my stomach.Contents in the mint sort are: xylitol, Acacia gum, cellulose gum, natural mint flavour, magnesium stearate, calcium carbonate. On them it says "proven to reduce morning dry mouth".
I do try to avoid certain fillers like magnesium stearate where I can, but if I don't find an alternative without it, I'll have a go at these. My chewing gum sticks well too. Didn't fully realize it, but it says it's for dry mouth too, and I'd always thought just cos it's gum. Mine is from Xucker.com (Zucker is German for sugar), very natural.
Hi - my mouth gets specially dry & hurting in the 2nd half of the night. None of the reasons above (Sjögren's, meds, open mouth) fit. Apart from sipping every time I'm up, GC dry mouth gel helps a bit (recommended by my dental hygienist), I don't want to try Biotène gel due to it containing sorbitol.
Yes, I have dry mouth syndrome and the medication I was taking for fibromyalgia made my mouth feel like it was burning - I no longer take it. It’s strange that you mention having no thyroid, I have a very under-active one and a doctor once asked if I wanted to have a test for Sjögren’s sysndrom, which is associated with autoimmune diseases. (I have dry eye syndrome too), he told me there was no cure for Sjögren’s syndrome so I declined. I’m already ‘labelled’ with so many other things, like diabetes, fibromyalgia, coeliac disease etc. I didn’t want to be labelled with anything else.
The tablets (which you dissolve on your tongue) I was given by my doctor for my dry mouth contained sorbitol and that brings it’s own problems so never asked for any more, I was also advised to chew gum, but that caused trapped wind and also, it’s very difficult to find chewing gum that’s considered safe for coeliacs as most contains gluten. You need to sip water or juice etc. or a boiled sweet to alleviate your symptoms.
Hi - yeah, sorbitol I also need to avoid.
Trapped wind from gum I always thought was from the chewing, but I don't get it with my sort and I think that's cos it doesn't contain any mint.
Mine from Xucker doesn't seem gluten free, but a sort I can see is, is XyliChew.
Yes, mint can cause that. Unfortunately Xylotol is something else I cannot tolerate, it makes me feel violently sick. Seems it’s not just dogs that it’s poisonous for. I wonder what affect it has on the liver?
Oh dear, but I can imagine: if xylitol can be laxative then feeling sick might be similar. Seems in dogs it dangerously decreases blood sugar, increases insulin and in them that can actually cause liver damage. In humans xylitol (less than mannitol and and sorbitol) increases diarrhea & gas (IBS), uric acid, blood acidity, kidney stones, whilst allergic reactions are usually on the body surface ("skins", incl. breathing, throat), so no liver problems known in humans. Can't find your feeling sick anywhere, seems a very specific reaction. Fortunately one of the substances that's easier to avoid.
Would GC dry mouth gel be something you'd tolerate?
I have diabetes so maybe it’s something to do with insulin levels or the low blood sugar. (Or maybe I’m part dog 😂). There’s a lot of things I’m allergic to and also a lot of food intolerances. I could look into the dry mouth gel, but usually I find an additive that doesn’t agree with me 🤦🏻♀️.
