Morning 🌼 I have just had a note put on my notes for Amitriptyline saying use should be at lowest does due to the risk of dementia. It said something about the anticholinergic burden scale. I'm really scared. Is anyone else aware of this? Thank you!

Amitriptyline & dementia
Hi 👋 I've been taking amitriptyline for a few years now and my doctor has just increased my dose to 20mg at night. I haven't heard of this dementia thing but to be honest, at the moment I'd probably take almost anything if it helps me to cope with the constant pain I'm in. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck. 😊
I've been on Amitriptyline for over 10 years with the dose varying between 50mg and 150mg. I was aware of this as a side effect and I brought it up with my neurologist as obviously I'm fairly terrified about getting dementia, she said on balance she still thought I should take it because I'm an insomniac with chronic migraines the benefits out way the costs.
Thanks for the reply. I guess I need to go see my gp then for peace of mind. Stay well 😊
I think if you are an older person who is already infirm I think it is more of a risk and obviously if dementia runs in your family. It has made me reluctant to go to a higher dose but I think it basically comes down to stress bc loss of sleep etc is also a risk for dementia. If your GP says anything interesting about please let us know!
Useful info, thanks.
