They advise no drinking. Early days for you. I don't drink anyway so I cant say what happens!

Welcome to the forum. It seems especially quiet tonight. Hopefully will get busier later on. The more input the better really. Wish you well, we are a friendly bunch generally. :) Tulip xx

Hi sigurlaug , and welcome to our forum.

You might like to have a look at our mother site at fmauk.org. where you will find loads of useful info.

To answer your question.....the answer is no, you shouldn't drink alcohol while taking Amitriptyline. If you look at the patient Information leaflet (PIL) that comes with your pills, you will find all the info about taking Amitriptyline on there.

Take care.

GP. 😊😊

Hi sigurlaug

I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? Welcome to the forum and it is wonderful to make your acquaintance.

I have pasted below for you an excerpt and a link to a ''*Arthritis UK Research pdf on Amitriptyline,'' so I hope that you find this useful:

*Can I drink alcohol while on amitriptyline?

You should avoid alcohol as amitriptyline increases the effects of alcohol and may make you drowsy. This is especially important if you’re driving or using machinery.

I want to genuinely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

I find a glass during the day is OK so long as I am not doing anything, but if I drink after taking the amitryptiline I feel quite queasy and the next day am very dopey. I only take 10mg of an evening but gave been told it needs to go up to 20mg so I guess it will become worse with the increased dose.

I guess I need to take the pledge for the foreseeable!

I have the odd glass of wine ( maybe every ten days ). It does make me feel dehydrated and a bit headachy the next day but I drink it with my meal and then drink plenty of water during the evening. The danger is drinking too much and falling or being sick whilst asleep. I take Noritryptoline which is essentially the same. I would never drink alone or more than a very small amount. To be honest after a glass I don't feel like more as its been over a year since I drank more than that and sometimes weeks and weeks go by without me having anything . The leaflet with my medication says avoid alcohol which I take to mean not advised. With the morphine I was on the advise was ' do not drink' Quite clear.

Maybe discuss with your GP who will know you and your personality.

But never ever drink to get drunk !

Hi,

I've been on Amitriptyline for years and drink alcohol as normal but amitriptyline has never made me drowsy. If it makes you drowsy then maybe it's best not to or try 1 drink and see how you go. Maybe a day when you don't have to drive etc

Hello

I asked my doctor the same question as I like a glass or two of wine in the evening and it does help me sleep. He explained that the anitriptyline will increase the effect of alcohol but if I am careful then to try a small glass of wine to start with. I take my tablet as I am climbing into bed and have a drink early evening with dinner. I had been on anitriptyline about 3 months (on the lowest dose) before I had a drink, just till I got used to it. I do enjoy a wine especially during the summer so if I were you I would ask your gp for advice as we are all different. I wouldn't have done it without discussing it with him so I am glad I did. This was a few years ago and I seem to be doing ok. Just don't over do it! Cheers 🍸 Hope this helps.

I have had no problems. I think each person is different though, and what works for one has a detrimental effect on the next person. I am a great believer in 'everything in moderation'. Obviously I wouldn't recommend going out binge drinking, just for those who are worried about my answer! I can have a couple of glasses of wine, or G&Ts with the only effect being that I'm likely to fall asleep! Make sure you have someone with you that you know you can rely on so that they can get you home if you have any adverse affects. It is recommended that you don't drink alcohol on amitriptylene but it's the same with most drugs you take. 🐸

I am on 35mg of amytriptyline and don't have a problem with alcohol. I drink maybe once or twice a month, never a lot but when out having a meal usually a flavored cider which counts as two units, or a large wine which maybe 3. But as someone else said we are all different.
