Gabapentine & Amitriptyline

I've just been started on gabapentine 100mg 3 X a day. I also take 50mg of Amitriptyline at night. It seems a lot. My mood seems a bit off so I'm not sure if it's the pills or not. Wot symptoms do others have. Any feed back would be good

Hi there

What time of day do you take your Amitryptyline? Try taking it around 6pm. That means that you won't feel quite so groggy the next day.

Dependant upon how much Amitryptyline you're on, it should lift your mood, not the other way around.

The most common side effects from Gabapentin are weight gain and drowsiness. The drowsiness does wear off after a few weeks.

Your dose is not particularly high. It just sounds like a lot. I'm on a much higher dose than that.

I take both of these medications so am just speaking from personal experience and am not a medical professional.

Wishing you less pain and more peace

Gabapentin can make you extremely drowsy particularly at first. Have you tried dropping one or two tablets to see if that helps and then increase again a week later? Most start off on a low dose and then gradually work up.

Obviously be extremely careful if you are thinking of driving as your reactions will be very much slower.

For some people this is an extremely good medication and works well, for me I was in a continual stupor and didn't know which way was up.

There is another medication, Pregabelin which is similar and some people find they tolerate that better, so all is not lost if you don't get on with Gabapentin.

I take amitriptyline at night and find that is enough for me, although I was a bit moody to begin with. Hubby says "so what's new"!

We are all different, taking medication is a lot of trial and error. What works for one may not be suitable for another.

Hi Bailey 13,

Like BlueMermaid3, I take both, but at a higher dose because of recent prolapsed discs. I agree with Blue, you need to think about when you take the 'Amytrip' and the 'GabiP'.

I take 3x300mg early in the morning to ease my thigh muscle pain, along with 2x50mg Tramadol. I then stay bed bound until 4 hours later when I take the same dose again. After about 30 minutes, I have enough pain control absorbed I can shave and shower. Do need quick bed rest and leg cuddle to get through.

You need to think through your day, and work out when you really need that relief and for how long. Then work out when to take, allowing 30 minutes for support to work. Gabapentinis really effective when used properly. Say 1st dose on wake up, 2nd dose 1/2way through working day, then 3rd dose at end of working day (not at bed time).

As Blue mentions, you need to find the right time to take the 'Amytrip'. I take mine just before I go to bed, so it starts to work partway through the night, so extends my deep sleep time. As I stay in bed until about 10am, I don't gave the groggy feeling.

Only you can find out wham us best for you, but any questions/worries, come back on here for help and understanding.
