DRY MOUTH AT NIGHT

I have been losing sleep due to an extremely dry mouth at night and nothing seems to help. I’m not a diabetic. Does anyone else experience this problem please?

I keep a drink at side of bed for this very reason, also often have boiled sweets to sook

I'm not sure if mine is medication side effects or something else - as some nights are worse than others

Thanks Hazel, yes some nights are worse than others, water and lozenges don’t help , the only medication I am on is a beta blocker for a heart arrhythmia. I had blood tests at Rheumatology and they were ok. Thanks for your reply.

Do you have dry eyes, mouth or other other areas at other times of the day? If so then have a look at Sjogren's.

Hi yes I have this all the time. I even had an endoscopy as I also have acid reflux but it was clear. I use a special biotene toothpaste when I can get it its quite expensive. I also have biotene mouthwash and gel and a dry mouth spray from boots by my bed. I’ve done research and its probably a fibromyalgia symptom for me as well as the medication. Supposed to chew sugar free gum. Alcohol makes it worse.

Have you been checked for Sjogren's syndrome? It's an auto immune condition and that's one of the symptoms.

Hi there - could be sicca syndrome?(sjogrens is the full blown version with antibodies and positive lip biopsy, schirmer test etc) ? Look it up and see if you have other symptoms. Do you drink 2.5litres of water a day? You might be dehydrated - most of us are but unaware. I use Salivix pastilles (can buy in pharmacy) for this part of my sjogrens. My eye balls also stick fast to my eyelids each night and I have many eye ointments and drops for this and during day. Make sure you ventilate the home in the day every day, drink a glass of water once an hour and keep room humidified if very dry air as my bedroom is. I have a humidifier which my plants also love! If not put a wet towel on radiator each night which helps a little. Hope that helps but do look ip sicca and if you have other obvious symptoms, definitely tell your clinicians and GP. Keep safe, D

HI... I've just looked up beta blockers... one of the side effects is dry mouth. My other thought is are you a 'mouth breather'... that can do it too.

I have suffered from a dry mouth for a long time. I didn't realise it was a symptom. I never put 2 and 2 together. I just sleep with glass of water at the side of the bed. Only medication I take is tramadol.

For my dry mouth I have a tube of GC dry mouth gel next to my bed (along with all the other bits'n'pieces in 2-3 empty tissue boxes). The Bioetène dry mouth gel contains sorbitol I looked up the other day, that might get a GI problem. Also all Bioetène products contain mint which I don't tolerate (hyperacidity).

I was checked for Sjögren's, the lip biopsy was negative. Then I realized I had 5-6 dry parts of my body, like skin as well, and stomach (hyperacidity means too little water), so called that sicca syndrome - which didn't help since I didn't know how I could change that. Drinking even more didn't help at all, just made me have to go to the loo more.

I also had dry mouth from amitriptyline like @Blueoxo said as well, as from the antihistamine that help my jab-side effects (MCAS).

What I've now tho realized is that what I always thought is a dry mouth was actually more like burning - everything sticks together at night, yes, but it also hurts and I've also been getting a burnt tongue feeling for days and also a burnt mouth feeling. This was pre-jab, but now increased, so I've been thinking about burnt mouth syndrome and I'm putting it down to the "MCAS", since it's gone since I've been taking the histamine. Also interesting that it was always in the second half of the night, altho it doesn't make a difference how much I drink. That makes sense since I realized I have a load of histamine/MCAS problems (stuffy nostrils and burning sinuses) in the 2nd half of the night, and histamine normally has its peak at 3am. All of these have gone since using the antihistamine...

I have a very dry mouth and dry throat and dry eyes I keep a drink although sometimes I have to make a warm drink as the dry throat sometimes makes me choke

Could it be sinus? Try clearing before bed. Sipping a hot drink helps. I hope you find out the source of the problem.

I find too much tea orcoffeecauses it. Also surprisingly I read too much sugar a s sugary sweets cause it. Drink boiled water that's cooled
