Bitter taste in mouth

Does anyone else get a bitter taste in their mouth. I have had this now for over a week and coffee tastes awful. A friend of mine says it can be anxiety related. Wierd feeling. I have been getting twitching lately and that has made me very anxious even though the doctor has reassured me nothing to worry about. Any help appreciated

Hello Patdoyle,

Sorry you're experiencing this unpleasant symptom.

I wrote a similar post not only the other day (I'm going to write an update post in a little while - I don't want to repeat myself) and people gave me a lot of support and advice. You're welcome to take a look - although try not to let other people's misfortunate regarding their experience of this worry you too much, remember you're not them - we're all dealing with different things and just trying to help each other best we can. If you want me to, I can refer back to the post myself and give you a summary of all of the things people found helpful. That way you don't have to read other people's unpleasant stories.

The main explanations I got from the post was that this can be a side affect of medication (Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline, Tramadol, Pregabalin or Gabapentin) and one of the many mysteries of Fibromyalgia.

There are a number of things can help though. If the doctor said it's nothing to worry about at least you can take the positive from that. But if you're still not satisfied it might be worth getting a second opinion with a different doctor and they might be able to advise you on what can help?

Anxiety is a common feature of Fibromyalgia - I think with a condition like this our bodies are likely to interpret anything different or unpleasant as a threat. Twitching can also be an effect of anxiety and Fibromyalgia. I've had some advice about reducing anxiety and I can summarise this for you as well if you like? I don't want to over load you with information - especially if there are things you already know. Even if it isn't threatening - it still isn't a nice thing to experience and to not be able enjoy the occasional cup of coffee (I say occasional because too much caffeine isn't advised with Fibromyalgia) - so I hope you will be able to get some relief from this.

Gentle hugs xx

Thankyou for the reply. It would be great if you would refer me to your post and any help on anxiety is good too. I suffer badly from anxiety since I developed CFS/fibro. I saw a neurologist yesterday and could hardly get my words out I was so nervous.

Hi Patdoyle,

Sorry you suffer so much with anxiety. One thing my friend (a fellow Fibromite and CFS sufferer) said to me recently is whenever you feel it coming on: stop, deliberately lower your shoulders and take a deep breathe. The Alexander technique is a breathing exercise - I found a useful page on it the other day and I'll try to find it for you in a minute. She advised to practise it 20 minutes before bed. Have a routine, don't think the worst, and accept that what will be will be - this is also what she said. That's not everything she said but those are the main points.

You can find mindfulness exercises and calming music on Youtube - and little mindfulness guides (small enough to put in your pocket/handbag) from Waterstones - that might be a good place to start. There are more detailed books on mindfulness but again I don't want to overload you. You could also try closing your eyes and counting to 10? Nothing to lose by giving that a go.

(Just for the benefit of anything admin who might be reading... wouldn't it worth doing pinned posts advising on Fibromyalgia issues - such as sleep, anxiety - and give people the opportunity to contribute their own suggestions? That way members don't have to repeat the same thing to different people, they can just sign post them to the post - and there's less chance of users having to trail through people's unpleasant experiences, which doesn't do much to help them if they're dealing with anxiety.)

Okay. Now I'm going to refer to my dry mouth post and see what people have said. :-) xx

Hi Patdoyle ☺ i get this too & was told it was Amitriptyline probably.

I get terrible muscle spasms that can be a small & constant twitching & you can see it sometimes in my leg or foot, or it can be a big spasm which covers a larger area of muscle, in my back or stomache, around my ribs & side but it doesn't last for long.

It is all your muscles going Into spasms & as your doctor said, nothing to worry about but I know where your coming from & it doesn't stop you worrying, mind doing overtime.

All I can say is, I've had it for years & I'm still here lol. Although it is very annoying & i don't like it, it's horrid. I take quinuine sulphate as this helps & don't get it so bad, so often.

Peace, luv n light

Hi Janet, have you had your vital do levels checked, low levels cause muscle cramps.

I used to get an awful bitter taste in my mouth all the time when i was on sleeping tablets. are you on any of those by any chance?

I agree with flower8819 when I am fed of of not sleeping I sometimes take a sleeping pill the doctor gave but told me not to take them regular, they are Zimovane 7.5mg.

The bitter horrid taste these leave can last about a week, now I take usually about thirty tablets a day including gabapentin but this taste is the worst.

Hi Patdoyle

I am so genuinely sorry to read that you are experiencing this issue, and I have to admit that I get this quite a lot and it really makes my tea taste strange. I spoke to my GP about this going back a bit and she says mine is to do with medication. I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

Am going through this horrible stuff now. The back of my mouth tastes so awlful. Even when i brush, its still there. But i found that it's because of the medication am taking. Mine is Antibiotics (Clarithromycin and amoxicillin). I hope this subsides as soon as i finish my medication. And again, Some sleeping tabs has been traced to bitter mouth. And chinese pine nuts too. I hope we all get outta this stuff soon.
