Hi. Apologies as this has probably been asked already but does anyone find relief from using pain gels such as Voltarol?

Thanks so much

I use voltarol. It only takes the edge off a bit. Tbh I’m a fan of deep heat. It really gets into the muscles .

As you say voltarol takes the edge off but does not really deal with the level of pain that this disease generates.even Zapain is not totally effective.what about any other pain killers? Has anyone found anything. .What about prescribed cannibas-does it help.

I have a prescription for medical cannabis (Sativex). Yes, it does help. Besides helping (but not completely eliminating) pain, it helps with anxiety and depression. Britain is in the dark ages as regards cannabis. It is both more effective and much safer than either opiates or epilepsy drugs like gabapentin or pregabalin. Cannabis also has much fewer side effects than the other drugs we are offered for pain control. I also use Low Dose Naltrexone, which also reduces pain and is not available from the NHS. My GP writes me a prescription and I send it to a compounding pharmacy in Glasgow, where it is much cheaper, in my experience, than in England. Besides medications I use a heating pad for pain. I find that meditating and gentle exercise are also helpful.

I am prescribed Fenbid Gel 10% by my GP for my osteoarthritis, but I also use it when my 'Fibro' leg pain is bad, seems to help a bit.

I have actually found freeze gel better on some types of pain such as the burning g ones I have a lot of and heat rub on others. Unfortunately, I can't use Voltarol. Hope you find something that helps.x

I've found that freeze gel helps more, I've also got ibuprofen gel but that doesn't do too much not compared to the freeze gel

I use bio freeze gel. My chiropractor uses it routinely during my sessions and I continue with it in between appointments. Not a cure all but certainly helps. Epsom salt baths help also with muscle pain and cramps.

yes, I ALSO HA VE FOUND BIO-FREEZE HELPFUL THOUGH THE SMELL DOES AFFECT MY EYES, BECAUSE THEY ARE SO SENSITIVE.

I am sure you can take Magnesuim so maybe you could try the Magnesium Gel as well

Thanks everyone for your help. I guess I’ll have to try a few things and see what works for me! x

Yes can help in small area’s

Yes it does help my neck and back pain, but these are areas where I have disc degeneration, my fibro is mainly muscle pain in my legs and arms, can’t really use on large areas, would probably use like a whole tube in a day 😂

As I understand it, the working theory of fibro pain is that it is not in muscles or tendons. Apparently, leg pain isn't actually generated from the leg. It comes from the nervous system and especially the brain and the part of the brain that deals with fight-flight. That stuff is well beyond my knowledge, but raises interesting questions about how we preceive our pain and why meds like paracetamol don't have much effect.

Hiya rockgo I’ve always thought that would be great as a shower gel or something to put in your bath because I would have to use it all over! ( not that I have a bath just a disabled shower!🤪) wouldn’t that be a great product!! If you use that cream in lots of places at once would it be dangerous???

If you mean Voltaren gel (difleniac) then it's bad news. I over used this for months when my pain first began and although it helped I ended up with extreme sensitivity. Now I cannot touch it. Gut pains, sore eyes, heart pain and heart palpitations within a few minutes of use.

That was many years ago, I see they have changed the package insert now to state max 1wk usage etc.

I also can't take diclofenac. I used to take it before my fibro set in and in the end it gave me an excruciating pseudo-IBS. I can't believe that it is safe (at least when taken orally) for anyone. It has been responsible for the near extinction of vultures in India. You can look it up online.

Dbry profile image
Dbry in reply toTrappedmoth

Yeah I was aware of the vultures thing. PseudoIBS - thats a good way to put it - for me all the symptoms I described are for the topical gel so not taken orally. Pharmacist told me that the technology is similar to nicotine patches, so it is absorbed into the body / blood stream etc.

Yes, I use Voltarol gel sometimes for my knee, but I get my son to put it on as I can't stand the smell! It persists on hands for at least 24 hours, even when well washed.

One help would be to use rubber gloves, of course!

I also use Ibuprofen gel in the knee when I can't get my son the use the Voltarol!

There are two kinds of Voltarol, one for joints and one for muscles.

Cheers Midori

I use a "blended therapies" cream called "ouch cream" it doesn't have paracetamol or ibuprofen in it and you can use it as often as you need it. It really works for me. Check out the website blended therapies.co.uk. it cost between £7- £15, depending on what size of tub you want. Hope this helps.

Voltarol gel doesn’t touch the pain. I use Tiger Balm which you can buy from Boots. This just takes the edge off it but helps to sleep when my knees are killing me.

The only thing that has given a little relief for my neck and shoulders pain is the Neurofen medicated plaster. You leave them on for 24hours. Hope this will help. Xxx

Hi, I use it but it’s not as affected as doctors gave me (Axsain) it’s really burn but it has relief some pain so you can sleep at least some hours. You only need to apply very fine. Not a lot. Many Thanks

I mix my own by replacing SBC Arnica Gel for the water recommended for making 'Magnesium Oil' with Magnesium flakes (using the 1 part arnica gel to 2 parts Magnesium flakes recipe I found on the back of the Magnesium flakes tub.) If you decide to use this, you need to know that A. you need to shake it well, until the magnesium flakes dissolve and turn the gel into a liquid, and B. depending on how dehydrated you are, it may sting a little.I use it on painful limbs and joints and on the 'stringy' muscles I get from time to time.

Hope this helps,

dee

Hi, I use Pernaton Gel it helps a lot especially for the leg cramps. It's Green Lipped Mussel Extract gel. I hate the smell, it smells lemonny and I can't stand lemons, but I put a face mask on to apply it. It's not cheap but is effective. Hope this helps, gentle hugs sent your way.

I use Pernaton gel as you say. The one with cayenne pepper in. I buy it from Amazon about £11/£12 but worth it. It does penetrate well but I think the massaging it in is 50% of the relief.

Hi, I've tried hot and cold gels / rubs but nothing seems to make a difference for me but everyone is different. Give it a go, you've got nothing to loose by trying x

Haven't found any benefit. Massage and chiropractice seems the best, but then I've got a lot of other problems too. Anybody out there have trouble with their stress levels i.e cortisol?

Hi, I get ‘piroxicam’ on prescription, it works, but only for a short while, so reapply several times (hands and knees). As someone above said, ‘deep heat’ is great and you can get from the supermarket. I also use vicks vapo-rub on my forehead/ neck/ shoulders to bring the pain and stiffness out.

I've used deap heat and it doesn't work for me the freeze gel is better. I've tried voltarol which is prescribed by doctor that didn't help my bad foot swells and becomes numb but the pain is horrendous . X

Rockgo, Pernaton cold gel for me. I have fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis for which I’m awaiting back surgery and also suffer from anxiety. Hope this helps. All the Best.

I swear by tiger balm, or comfrey, on muscle pain and recurring fractured ribs, and magnesium oil spray on me knees for my osteoarthritis👍👍

Adlon57 profile image
Adlon57

Perhaps I will put it simplified, tiger balm of comfrey ointment for muscle pain and it helps on the pain caused by recurring fractured ribs [deformed chest so refracture all the time] also lidocaine medicated plasters [I seem to have hit the jackpot here, after a visit to a local hospital, particularly generous amount given to me] excellent for those fractured ribs🤪🙃Walking down those stairs, the click🥴click🥴of my kneecaps, the magnesium oil spray especially after a shower in the morning, keeps them better lubricated!🤗

I use Ibruprofen Gel 10 per cent prescribed by the doctor it helps, also Capcin cream which is good for arthritusThe later is very quick but can burn the skin if you have a shower/bath the next day but it is worth it.
