Experience on Antibiotics

Hi everyone. The past couple of weeks I’ve been dealing with nausea (I also have severe GERD and IBS). I recently got diagnosed with PID and an infection. Been put on ofloxacin and metronidazole. I’m taking 6 antibiotics a day for 2 weeks started on Friday. Do antibiotics flare up/make your symptoms worse? Severe nausea and headaches. My body is in agony especially upper shoulders/lower back and having cold sweats. First time taking antibiotics since diagnosis and know people can be more sensitive to medication. I’ve taken metronidazole years ago and had no issues (pre Fibro/cfs)

Can you clarify, is your PID Primary Immune deficiency or pelvic inflammatory disease?

Metronidazole is a really potent antibiotic. It can kill the bad bacteria but can also kill the good stuff too..My symptoms flare when I am out on antibiotics and unfortunately that tends to happen quite regularly.

Have you tried probiotics? I'd also speak to your GP about pain management while things flare up. They will likely settle after the course is finished. You might just need something to help bridge the gap?

Yeah not having a good time on them at all! I’ve taken metronidazole a few years ago and was fine! I’ll definitely try probiotics. Is there anything you find helps with pain? Some days my pain is worse and other days its all the other symptoms :(

Everyone is different. I have lupus too so take opioids, pregablin, paracetamol and I find exercise vreally helpful too. I am also on steroids so my cocktail is different to yours. Good luck

Hi there, you say this is the first time taking antibiotics since fibro diagnose.

May ask have you taken antibiotics before and was you ok with them?

Hi yes first time taking antibiotics since being diagnosed a year ago. I have taken one of the antibiotics I’m on before and was fine. But I have heard this particular antibiotic can have nasty side effects and Fibro obviously makes us more sensitive to meds

Hi there, I undestand what you say. But if you was ok taking the antibiotic before your diagnose of fibro. I have no idea why it should adversely effect you since your diagnosis of fibro.

I have had fibro and CFS for 40 years and t be honest what didnt effect me then thankfully does not effect me now. But like we keep saying we are all different xx

Hi, my old GP who was really quite advanced for the time always advocated taking vitamin B complex alongside any antibiotics. Might be worth a try?

Hi, I don’t post on here very often but I was worried about you. I have never had problems with antibiotics until recently, I’ve had fibromyalgia for twenty years. I’ve been experiencing side effects with every antibiotic I’ve been given even being taken to hospital as a result of amoxicillin. Contact your doctor I know it’s not easy but speak to them just to be on the safe side. They may tell you to continue but may also change them for you. You can become allergic to anything even without fibro and if they are making you unwell you need to speak to someone. Hope you feel better x

Theoretically fibro shouldn't effect how you react to antibiotics as it's not supposed to be an autoimmune disease, but like Dizzy have said everyone is different. Obviously you can develop allergies at anytime. I have an allergy to penicillin in tablet form, this has not changed since having fibro but I also find I get more side effects with age.

Hi,metronidazol is a powerful antibiotic that makes me feel sick and is prone to making your stools very loose best way I could put that..Does also make you more Sensative as you stated but hope they work for you.

Hi copingwithex. I do understand your concerns. Me and antibiotics don’t get on. So many of them have totally wiped me out.

But the last few times I have been prescribed a 3 day course - not the usual 7 days. Can’t say I tolerated them any better - but it was over quicker.

I do think the Fibro makes me ultra sensitive to any chemical cocktail that I’m prescribed. I do try to avoid any medication - but sometimes it’s needs must.

Do hope you feel better soon.

Xxx
