I have just been prescribed Sertraline for pain. Evidently some anti depressants can help and also lift your mood at the same time, anyone havd any experience of this drug? I am a bit nervous about taking it.

why are you nervous about it? There are a number of antidepressants prescribed for helping with pain, sleep, muscle relaxation and anxiety. Their dosage and application is often different that when used for anxiety etc.

If you search on the site (top right) then you will find a number of peoples experiences but your response is your own and it is very common to find differences in how people respond to things so someone else's respond be it positive or negative will not relate to your own experience.

Yes that's true, Just interested to know, as drugs don't always agree with me and my big concern would be how I might feel coming of them.

Sertraline I think is a very good antidepressant it helped me for 3 years but stopped working as my fibromyalgia got worse but I found it to help with anxiety in the beginning but not with my pain xxxx

Thanks Lola more for pain really.

Hi Zobo

I currently take citalopram and also Amitriptyline and Pregabalin along with a couple of others but they are not really relevant to this post.

Two of these drugs can be taken as an antidepressant but mine are used purely for pain although I do benefit from citalopram with regard to my mood.

Don’t be nervous, if it doesn’t work for you then come off it. A few of my friends take Sertraline for their bad backs and are fine on it.

I can’t personally comment on Sertraline as I have never taken this particular drug but I think it’s a flip of the coin to see whether you would rather be in pain or have relief of pain.

Hope this helps

Thamlnks Panda, can I ask why you are on so many, I'm assuming it's necessary?

Hi Zoe,

Unfortunately I have really bad peripheral neuropathy, two prolapsed discs in my neck and osteoporosis in my hips and trigeminal neuralgia and of course the cherry on the cake the lovely Fibromyalgia 🤣

Hate saying that out loud lol, but I do a lot of meditation, had to give up yoga was really sad about that.

Always glass half full person 😊🐼🥰

i've not had much experience of sertraline (I was on it for a couple of months - but came back off them to go back on mirtazapine, which i've been on for several years. We are all different in how we react to medications and the benefit we get - so the only way to find out if a medication will help you is to try it. We often read people posting that they have had bad results -but the majority of people who are taking it may take it with no issues and have benefit ... but not posting about it.

I was prescribed this a long time ago and it was not pleasant for me. I switched to using St John's wort and exercise. Personally fewer poor side effects and hence more sustainable.

The only trouble is with St. John’s wort is it interacts with a lot of medications xxx

It's pain with me I'm not depressed but my mood is changeable due to this and lack of sleep and lifestyle changes.

I’m on it for depression and it’s the best thing I’ve done and I don’t seem to have had any side effects xxx

Hi zobo I have been on sertraline for a number of years. I have severe osteoarthritis in feet it's in my knees and when I was prescribed it was due to severe pain in my hips due to arthritis. I wasnt sleeping well and coping with the pain was a problem. The doctor said using sertraline could help with my mood rather than being classed as an antidepressant.

I finally had one hip done when I was 47which was brilliant but the pain in feet, fibro and other hip still is on going.

Hope this helps as everyone is different

Hi ZoBo, (great name) I was offered Sertraline for pain about 2 years ago. I didn't want to take an antidepressant but tried it to see if it helped pain. I have to admit I think it does work. I take 100mg and my pain is manageable. It never goes away completely but I don't have severe pain lasting weeks anymore. I don't see how I'll ever get off it though!

Hi Katy, I couldn't handle the side effects, after 3 days I came off them. They affected my gut, my pain, gas and nausea became so bad it was unbearable.
