Keto Diet started - feel so ill. Anyone else tried it?

Hi Everyone,

I have just started the keto diet as have heard it’s supposed to help fibromyalgia and RA symptoms. Besides hating the food. I hurt like hell and any small energy I did have seems to have disappeared too! Has anyone else tried this and if so any success. Is this just the first week detox symptoms?

"Supposed to help" - really means that there are a lot of people promoting it for our condition and others. As of the last time I checked there was no diet that has evidence of helping fibro and limited anecdotal evidence that elimination diets can help.

But a diet is something you can control and a healthier / healthy diet is going to be good for you.

Also remember that the research on weight loss diets is that our bodies ecosystem is changed by the diet which produces the initial results and then it gets used to it once more and that's why diets tend not to work over time after initial positive results. So negative and positive reactions to a diet change will be part of the package. But what goes into the body and accompanying activity levels can help general health which can help fibro or the general symptoms that you have.

Not heard of that diet,I would rub in Horse muck if it helped!!! Wots in this diet?

It's extremely low carb; usually a limit of less than 20g of carbs a day.

Most of your energy comes from fats, with enough protein to preserve muscle. So an apple would use up your entire daily allowance by itself. Many people swear it's changed their lives but as it's very difficult to stick to such a low level of carbohydrate in modern western diets, it's definitely not for everyone.

See You !!

I was just scrolling, as I was drinking water- thankfully- to take me nightly dose, when I scroll up and reading your reply ;

"...rub horse-muck in if it helped!"

Literally made me Choke!!

Ya Krazy Bits ! No warning ! Just "Horse muck !"

Now I've a wet quilt and am seeking the coughed out tabs to see what I missed!

Thanks Very Much !!

.

Quite literally! I've been down Low 2day, having spent most of it with the Fatigue !

Trouble is I can do nothing when I have it - as you probably know, but I'm 'Flaring' because my Back & Sciatica are having a very wicked time with me & blah! blah! Moan! Moan!

Until I "horse-mucked" the bed !!

So thank you Nurse Gladys 😆🤣

As Arkwright would've said: "Ya,ya, you've manmade an ooldd chhachap, verrry, ma,ma,manly !!"

😖😖😳😨

I tried it last year, didn’t realise it helped Fibro mind! You’re experiencing what they call the “keto flu” your body goes through it while it’s going into ketosis then it passes but it’s absolutely awful when you’re in it. What you need is to have electrolytes and magnesium whilst you’re doing it, it replaces what you’ve lost and stops you feeling awful. You can get little dissolvable tablets (like Berocca) from Boots etc and I think a Amazon do them called O.R.S. Give them a try and they should help! I loved keto and lost lots of weight on it!

I read up on it when so many people were extolling the virtues of it. As mclellans10 says there appears to be many side effects in the first few weeks which might make you feel worse before you feel better. Personally I think a well balanced diet is the way to go unless you know that you are intolerant to certain foods.x

I don't know whether Keto helps Fibro symptoms actively or not. What I do know is that sugar is terrible for absolutely everyone and has very negative effects on our systems. It's incredibly toxic and is more addictive than cocaine. This is conclusively proven in multiple studies which I can link for anyone interested. Reducing your sugar consumption is traumatic for your body until it adjusts so it's not surprising you feel rough.

I don't eat Keto per say but I do eat paleo and I definitely feel much better than when eating a 'standard' diet; even healthy, made from scratch standard food. I'm not evangelical about changing diets because they don't fix everything and people need open mindsets in order to try it out for themselves

But it helps me.

I don't really hold with fad diets; I eat most things, although I find that grain based foods make me nauseous and 'windy', so I have changed to mainly Sourdough bread, which has helped and instead of Pasta I use Rice noodles. I must make it clear that I am NOT coeliac, just have a mild(ish) intolerance to the major grains wheat, barley and oats. I'm fine with rice and Maize.

I have no problems with milk based products, so I can still eat my favourite cheeses!

I rarely eat processed foods, my son and I cook from scratch, so my digestive problems are kept under reasonable control.

I don't have much spicy food as that also makes me windy. Pickled onions and similar are also disappearing from my diet, which is sad, I love them!

Cheers, Midori
