Tramadol makes me really ill - anyone else?

I've now tried taking Tramadol 3 separate times and each time I've become really unwell.

Like I've been out boozing all night and cannot stand up, walk, or even speak properly. Does anyone have these symptoms? I'm so upset because I thought it would be a good source of pain relief for me.

Thanks Dave for the advice, I don't normally have these slide effects but this week I've been really bad with tramadol

I wish my GP would give me oramorph but he is very reluctant to do so. Are you on morphine for fibro?

I was like that the first time I took tramadol, I was away with the fairies for 12 hours. My Gp suggested I just take 1, 3 times a day and then go up to 2 once I had found it easier to deal with. I now find this my tablet of choice, although I do change to cocodamol every couple of months so I don't get too used to them but this is with Gp supervision.

I started on Pregabalin in November and this had an even worse effect on me to start with but I am now used to them and no further effects.

Good luck with it.

Hi jom277

I might take your advice and take just 1 instead of 2 but the pain is so bad I'm normally desperate at this stage.

I due to start a new part time job next week and I'm dreading it in case the pains in my legs start.

Do you work?

take a couple of paracetamol as well, my GP said it was safe plus I find once I have gone to 2 trams 3xdaily I try and mark out so that the paracetamol can be used in between.....only thing I found on changing from codeine to Tram my restless legs is worse, the coeds seemed to alleviate this nightmare.

Try one during the day and 2 at night, this may help with sleep too. Also if you have a heat pad or hot water bottle use this to ease other pain. Hopefully in a couple of days you should start to get used to the 1 and be able to up it. With 2 at night it should also get in your system sooner.

Thanks for all your helpful advice.

I'm so tired of the constant pain, I have used hot water bottles and I,have to,agree they really do help.

Can't really use them at work though I get enough strange looks with my sticks as it is!

No this is true. They know me at work so I have taken microwave heat pads into work plus I always keep an extra cardigan in the office.

The best thing I invested in this winter was an electric blanket at home, not officeamd its much better than hot water bottles as sorts all areas.

Good luck with it all. We are all here with help and tips that we have picked up along the way and pass on to others who may feel it useful.

Take care

Yup tramadol gives me the worst headache ever ...like I have been hit between the eyes with a hammer...... I was sooo excited to be given it as I had read such good reports ... But alas not for me...

I take Tramadol when I am climbing the walls, so by that point it's two Tramadol, two codcodamol and two anti inflammatory then I take myself to bed with the heat blanket on and a book, usually i will have to simply sleep off the effects and the day is a wright off. I have recently been put on Duloxetine though.

Hi Raffael,

Thanks for the reply. I've tried Duloxetine but this also didn't agree with me at all. Back to plain paracetamol as other meds aggravate my Crohn's Disease.

Not fair is it that some of us suffer from horrible illnesses.

Take care

Hi Lucy,

I've had pain meds now for a long long time, and I've on the highest does that I can be on. So one day a couple of months back I asked to go on Tramadol. My friend uses it and its been good fer her. So i went to see my GP and she prescribed me some. I took one capsule that very morning. I went out for lunch and came back and was ill. I was sick all day and night and generally was not good. it's bad dealing with the illnesses that I do have and being sick on top of that is awful. Anyway i ended up hospital and was released the day after. Two days after this I went back to my GP and begged her to put me back on what I was on previously. I haven't touched Tramadol since. I don't want to either. I can't handle anything like this. I'm sorry that you've become ill after taking it. Have you tried Dyhydrocodeine? I use that, pregablin and Amytriptaline. Hope that you discover something that works for you. Take care. Here if you need someone to talk too. xxxxxxx

People with fibro are so sensitive to so many medications - my problem is that I have paradoxical effects to so many - drops to lower eye pressures raise it, sleeping tablets and anti-depressants stop me sleeping altogether, analgesics often make pain worse, many others start flare of my Intistitial Cystitis, I even have paradoxical side effects - codeine gives me diarrhoea!!!!!! And the others seem to give me horrible side effects such as tingling, unbearable headache, etc. That's why I rely so much on alternative therapies, meditation, TENS machine, holistic massage, trigger point massage, Alexander Technique, etc. So keep trying, hope you find the right therapy for you.

Judith,

Sorry to hear about your inability to take conventional drugs on the one hand; but as I have the same problems it is reassuring that I am not alone, nor are you. Amitriptiline has me on the floor being sick, Tramadol is the same. Sleeping tabs. often wake me up, especialy Nightall. This forum is great for information, and to learn that you are not going insane because the drugs cause you more problems. I agree massage is helpful, so is a Jacuzzi.. Cathy

Hi, I've taken Tramadol once & that was enough for me. It did nothing for my pain but apparently I behaved very weirdly according to my husband. I'd been told to take 2 but only took 1.

I take 2 tramadol every day and they never do me anything but good, I also take naproxen and amitripilene, so I guess it does'nt make everyone sick, xx
