I've got so fed up with tea bags and that horrible scum that's on the top of the making the cup dark brown, I have gone back to loose tea. Ohhh, I'd forgotten what a real cuppa is like.
Btw, anyone know what that horrible scum is? Or are tea bags really scumbags

I don't drink black tea so can't comment on the scum. Redbush tea is very pleasant to drink and better for health reasons. I also like Liquorice tea especially on days when I'm trying to diet, trying but as yet not succeeding.
I'm really impressed with your weight loss. Well done you. Something thing mind wise has not worked for me this year and I have not been able to diet to loose 9 lbs as I would normally have been able to by this time of year. I know I must, but the best I can do at mo is to stay same weight. So you have done really well to loose those lbs. I know how hard it is.
Me&my mum was talking about this last week lol. Haven't got a clue what it is,but wasn't like it years ago.I always stick a sterilizing tablet into my cups at night to get them clean.
But would love to know if anyone knew what the scum is.
Hahaha I would definitely say Scummy cos I can't stand tea, I don't even like the smell of it. It's funny really as my whole family are tea drinkers. I don't think I drank a cup of coffee till I was in my very late 20s even early 30s. I love a cappuccino now days with a little choco sprinkle lol.
Luv Jan xx
I use a tassimo so I don't get the scummy stuff on top. Maybe it's due to scale? De scale kettle or buy a new one or brita filter your water before you put it in kettle. That's what we used to do before tassimo. Brita filter all water before it goes into kettle. Little expensive but prolongs the life of your kettle. Or you could just keep buying cheap kettles lol x
Thanks for such an interesting post so I have been doing a little reading on this. The *Guardian Newspaper says:
*Up to the mid-1990s scientists believed the scum on a cup of tea came from a thin layer of a waxy substance that coated the leaves and helped to waterproof them. When the leaves were put in hot water, the film melted to form a thin oily layer that floated on the surface of the tea.3 Nov 2005
However, **Severn Trent Water says:
**Sometimes when you make a hot drink such as tea, you'll notice a thin layer of sediment floating on top of your drink. This is due to permanent hardness which contains the sulphates of calcium and magnesium, which remain insoluble even when heated. This mineral content of the water may form as grainy deposits. They are often white, but can be stained by the tea. These are just naturally occurring minerals so are not harmful to your health.
I want to sincerely wish you all the best of luck and please take care of yourself my friend.
Hello VonnyM,,,,could it be tea dust?,,,I shake each bag before using it,,,,and cup going dark brown sounds like the tannin being pressed out,,,,I could not use loose tea,,I don't use the tea pot,,,,I just dump a tea bag into my mug with my sweetener and some milk,,then pour the Boiling water into the mug,,,wait a few moments and the lightly stir the tea and remove the bag,,don't like strong tea,,it does not refresh me,,,,relax and enjoy your brew,,,ttfn from karen.
I returned to using real (loose) tea a couple of years ago when I found out that the bags the tea is in is bleached (yukky scumbags). I don't buy teabags now as they taste so different to real tea. Ive also returned to using real butter instead of spreads as I read that some vitamin supplements need fat to absorb them and the chemicals in spread are awful. I have noticed the increase in price of butter and loose tea in the last year. The prices have increased a lot so maybe a lot more people are choosing to change from the more processed foods to more natural.
