Hi all I was wondering if anyone has been for an ESA Assesment and what it's like? I've had two pup assessments in 5 years but never had an ESA one snd wanted to know what to expect because I'm having panick attacks about it.

Hi.

No probs.

Getting Ready Beforehand ??

1. Talk about things that you can/can't do !!!

Think about how your illness or disability affects you - particularly on "Bad Days". You’ll have already mentioned lots of these things when you filled in the ESA50 form, but it will really help if you’re ready to talk about:

The kind of things you have difficulty with, or can’t do at all - for example, walking up steps without help, or remembering to go to appointments

What a usual day is like for you - how your condition affects you from day to day

What a "bad day" is like for you - eg, ‘On a bad day, I can’t walk at all because my injured leg hurts so much’ or ‘On a bad day, I’m so depressed I can’t concentrate on anything’

Worth remembering

You can write out a list of all these things and take it into the assessment with you. It’s fine to check it during the assessment if you’re worried about remembering things you want to say.

What to take with you

You’ll need to take identification with you to your assessment. A passport is usually best. If you don’t have a passport, you need to take along 2 different types of identification. For example:

your birth certificate

your full driving licence

a recent bank statement that shows your name and address

a gas or electricity bill

You should also have with you:

any pills or medication you need

any aids and appliances that you use like glasses, hearing aids or a walking stick

If you made and kept a copy of your ESA50 form, you can take this into the assessment if you want to. This will help you make sure you tell the assessor everything about your condition and don’t miss anything out. What to take with you

Julesq27 profile image
Julesq27 in reply to dispared

Hi ESA is employment and support allowance which is if you can't work, you apply for it and the Assesment is I assume like the one for pip but I don't know that's why I'm asking as I've been asked to go to one.

Hi Julesq27 is that your age 27? its just I feel for anyone who is starting out trying to convince these bord dr,s about our ilness, especially when half the time we dont have the support of our day to day dr, sI have got now that I can tell if my dr wants to see me or not, and i just say well i'm not going to get the attention i need so I tell him what i think he can handle so on and so on

maybe i would be the same if i was a dr and maybe didn't get my sleep or whatever reason he is haveing a bad day anyway take care chin up and all that and do remember that dont go to these dr looking your best and if your seeing him on a good day remember what your bad or worst day is like and tell him about that and when he asks how can you reach up above your head remember how hard it was to get things off a shelf , when you cant stand on stepts or chair to reach anything as your arm will only reach up to your mouth and how you cant lift a kettle or the jar of milk.

your not decieving them your being troughful because your tell him just how it is most of the time

I on a good day thought how hard could it be getting a job in an office filling a few things answering phone all day cant be that hard

Boy did i get a shock i stood it for a week oh my God every evening get trough the door toilet and get lying down in sheer agony all evening and even unil next morning draged myself off to work each day was the same only with my hole boady trobbling I gave it up

So we are not lazey people we are the opposite then we get depressed because we can't do all that we want to do , and we have to listen to people saying things like shure she looks so well she cant be in so much pain.

yes its wrotten folks but it the same price if you smile or not for people dont care or they dont understand and dont know how to have a conversation with someone who is in agony now if you have something wrong with you that they can see like broken arm then they can kinda deal with it .

And the dr are much the same......

Anyway good luck dear hope you get on ok God Bless

Ho Roisin no 27th is my bday but I've only just turned 40. I've always worked full time even after all my kids were born always went back to work. A few years ago I had no choice but to change to party time then changed again to less hours until I couldn't do it anymore at all. I was put in the ESA group but didn't have an Assesment and now out of the blue they r asking me to go to one. I suffer from anxiety and panick attacks so I'm babe a heart attack just thinking about it.

Thank you for the info I will update everyone x

My ESA assessment wasn't a horror story, it was absolutely fine. I saw a doctor, who was very gentle in her manner. We just went through my medical problems and discussed how they affect my ability to work and deal with day to day life. I had the assessment shortly after having stopped work after working full time for 44 years non-stop, so I was very new to unemployment and had never claimed any benefits before. I was just completely honest about how my conditions affect me. I had been hoping to recover enough to be able to work part-time, but the doctor recommended that I take things slowly and maybe start with a little voluntary work if my health improves. After the assessment I received a letter telling me I'd been put in the Support Group, and that was it. It was all very stress-free. I'm still hoping to be able to do a little part-time work at some point as you're allowed to do some work even if you're in the Support Group.
