Please can you advise me on PAIN RELIEF

Hello

I live in France now and I used to live in the UK. Just been to see my lovely French Doctor who speaks English and she informed me that the pain killers I was prescribed in the UK are not good for my Only Kidney.

I am on Naproxen 500mg x 2 daily. Co-dydramol Tablets 500mg 2 tablets 4 times a day and If I get a flare up I take Tramadol 50mg x 2 4 times a day.

Can anyone make a recommendation on what a good pain killer I can take that works. My French GP is worried about the damage I have/doing to my only Kidney. I am waiting on emergency blood result to come back sometime today I had this morning.

She has offered me Paracetomal with caffine but that did not work for me in the past when in the UK. I hate taking Tramadol and I am always poorly when I taken it.

With the Co-dydramol I get constipated, usually sick etc and find them hard to swallow, I even cut them in half but reach when I take them....as I hate taking these as well.

She is not happy with me taking these tablets

Many Thanks Ness

I think you may be better asking if anyone has found a unicorn horn as a positive answer will be just as difficult to find lol. Joking aside, I don't have the type of Fibro pain so many others seem to suffer terribly from. Don't get me wrong, when the pain flares up I'm in the same boat, but my incidences of pain don't last for more than a few hours. Yet!

My hero med wise is Amitriptylene. It allows me to sleep which really helps my pain. It also tames restless leg syndrome and the horrible twitching and jumping of other muscles in my body. It doesn't take it away though. Just makes it bearable.

One thing I have noticed on this forum is that what helps one person makes the next one ill. It really does seem down to trial and error. I'm sorry that there isn't a different story. Heat tends to help my pain, but you're in France and have access to lots of lovely heat and vitamin D. None of us enjoy taking meds, and most have nasty side effects. I can't plan anything in the morning as it takes me two hours just to loosen up enough and feel able to have a shower.

I apologise for not being of more help. If you ever find the answer, please, please let us know 🐸

No you have been a great help. Heat and the sun does make me better. But then got nagged by my GP about my tan! 😡 And explained I did have sun factor on! Im not going to take the Naproxen now and try not to take the other tablets. I think it was a wake up call and a shocker when she told me I shouldn't be on them........my last kidney blood test came back fine and that was a few months ago. I am so lucky I don't work in France......so every day is a holiday for me. I understand I will get good days and bad days but I want to be healthy and not put my only kidney at risk if I can help it. Just glad I have support from her and my hubby. Big thank you Sorebones xx

Ah! Gothca! I can understand your reticence with having just the one kidney. You do have to think of meds differently. Forget about getting a row for having a tan. Your Dr has to work indoors on the days you enjoy the heat lol. I think they are given a target to meet in the number of patients they give a sun warning to. Enjoy the heat, you lucky girl. Good luck with finding a suitable med, hopefully you will find one that doesn't affect the kidney 🐸

Sorry Sorebones but sun may be warming to the sore bits but skin cancer is pretty painful and disfiguring. We have to wear protection. If we are out in the middle of the day and certainly on hot days. Enjoy the sun yes, but be aware of its dangers always.

I speak as one who has two major areas of scarring from a Malignant Melenoma 30 years ago.

That's not so good Dee. It's a scary prospect. I always make sure that I have my cream on, I lived abroad for years so got into the habit.

But you are correct. We should always remember to apply a barrier. You can't be too careful in the sun. That way we can enjoy the heat and it's healing properties safely 🐸

I always go out in the Sun with Factor on and always over 20 for my body and 30+ barrier for my face. Then I put lots of Aftersun from good make and Gatineau tan accelerating on as well. Plus, I use Hair sun conditioners for my hair as I go too blonde in the sun......Thank you for all your advice. xx

I always had the spray on conditioner at my side when I had long hair and on holiday. Great stuff! A good scrub with body exfoliator before the sun cream helps too 🐸

Hi

Sorry to hear of your problems.

I too have bad reactions to opiates and do not take them.

I am not on any pain killers due to this.

I am using Volterol gel and hemp tablets, plus multi vits especially vit d.

I think it's difficult to say what may help a persons pain, as we're all different and what works for one may not for another.

As your dr speaks good English maybe she can look up fibro and suggest you see a consultant and get meds that may help, or maybe she can give you some?

Sorry I can't help you.

I do hope that you get the help you need.

Take care and best wishes.

Hi there Ness

You really need to be talking to your GP about what pain medications to take.

We are not medically trained and do not know what contraindications may be present even if we did suggest something.

I don't know what you can be referred for in France and so it is extremely difficult for us to give you any answers.

What works for me, may actually make you very ill.

Wishing you less pain and more peace

Hi nessakt

I am so genuinely sorry to read of your suffering and struggling and I sincerely hope that you can find some resolution and relief to these issues. I have pasted for you a link to our mother site, FMA UK which hosts loads of useful Fibro information:

fmauk.org/

I was wondering if you were taking any pain preventative medications such as Amitriptyline, Nortriptyline, Gabapentin or Pregabalin? It may prove beneficial to discuss with your doctor a different approach to your medications and talk about a preventative?

Other things that could possibly help you are activities such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy or CBT? Maybe using a TENS Machine could also help alleviate your pain? There are many such things that you could discuss with your doctor!

I want to genuinely and sincerely wish you all the bets of luck, and please take care of yourself.

All my hopes and dreams for you

Ken

I would recommend Lidocaine patches which are placed on to the skin for 24 hours where your pain is. It does feel like magic, it numbs the skin and gives pain relief to that area. I don't have Fibromyalgia but use them for acute Pancreatitis pain because I have badly damaged kidneys, although I almost threw them back at the doctor at the pain clinic because, for me pain medication had always been a tablet and the idea that this doctor wanted me to try a big sticking plaster instead filled me with true dread but they do work.

Thank you........My french Doctor has been amazing and phoned me back that day to tell me my kidney is very good. But, stay off the tablet Napaxon which I have done.........Only taking Paracetomal and codeine......not touching the pain I am in. She wants to see me in a few weeks........So glad I don't work as I can see a sick call coming on! I have been on them before and they were excellent. She did mention these and I said I'll see how I go. But it looks like I will be asking for these. Thank you for helping me and understanding the pain I am in xxxx
