Sore wrist and thumb
Wow! Cant believe this.
About 5 or 6 weeks ago I began to get a pain in the middle of my right hand, sort of between little finger and wrist but deep in the palm.
This then developed into little finger. Really bad. I couldnt grip, hold, pick up a glass of drink or anything. I couldn't manipulate the door handle to open the door out of my room in the morning.
anyway, this spread to my wrist and just kept getting worse. Doc had a feel and my pain team physio also had a look and they both agreed something was wrong. They both suspected a stress fracture from using my hand to support my weight...you know, crutches, getting up, gettibg in and out of chairs etc. Long story short. X ray came back clear! Doc and physio really baffled by that.
hand has improved slightly but pain is often very bad in my wrist.... Now, as of yesterday it has started in my left hand same place only can feel it in middle finger on this one not little finger.
After waffling for half hour I am sorry to say everyone still at a loss as to what it is although they are very sure it Definately is something. Something to do with what they can feel in the metatarsals (think thats right but excuse my ignorance of the skeleton names)
I know this hasnt been any help but reading your post actually helped me. It was nice hearing that someone else is getting strange pains in wrist/thumb/fingers etc so wanted to return favour and say you are not the only one. Even I we are the only 2 ha.
Let me know if you find out. Me...I think its all fibro, but you never know.

I have to be very careful with my hands and wrists.
The joint at the base of the thumb just bellow the wrist gives me a lot of pain.
The right hand is worse than the left, also the tip of the thumb on the right hand just in the area of the nail always feels like it has been hit hard with a hammer,, it feels badly bruised. Most of the tips of my fingers have felt like this at one time or other but it never leaves this thumb.
The problem at the wrist thumb is definitely at least partially inflammatory as it dose respond to anti-inflammatory medications including topical AF jellies.

Hi basketcase54
I am so sorry to read that you are suffering in this way, and I genuinely hope that you can find the answers that you are searching for. I do not suffer with this issue myself, but it does sound very unpleasant. I would personally return to your doctors, as if there is any inflammation they can give you medication for this?
I want to wish you all the best of luck.
All my hopes and dreams for you

Hi basketcase,
What you are discribing sounds like rheumatoid arthritis but you can usually find that out by a blood test and I'm sure they have checked. However, us fibros get all sorts of aches and pains for no reason other than just because. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted one way or another.
Blessed be xx
Hi basketcase, I too have this problem with my hands, my fingers lock, I hsve to becareful when picking things up can't lift heavy pans , even light things really. I think I need supports my wrists are very weak. I have been xrayed and tested for ra so its all down to fibro. A long with a lot of people on this site I am really suffering with pain I just don't know what to do with myself. I am keeping warm and resting taking pain meds roll on the spring.
Gentle hugs for everyone

Reading your post I am pretty sure you are already on Levo, but I had some awful hand, wrist and arm pains in the initial stages of underactive thyroid. Thought I had rhumatoid arthritis, it was so painful and lumps at base of thumb to mention just a few things, like you describe. OK now since been diagnosed and treated with Levo. No pains, no lumps and bumps. Marvellous stuff if it works for you, and of course if you have no further complicated illnesses as do a lot of poor souls on this forum.
I agree that is sounds like RA. Although it does not always show up in a blood test. I have been diagnosed with seronegative RA, meaning my RA tests are all perfectly fine. But, the ultrasound of my hands and wrists show inflammation that indicates moderate to severe RA. The lumps you describe are often a sign of having RA. If your inflammation markers are high or even high normal, I would suggest asking for further testing like an ultrasound to find out what is going on. Time for you to get some relief. Hope the pain eases and you are able to smile.
