Hi there, when you say rubber, could I ask what sort you mean? If it's like a memory foam mattress I have always been told not to, but others I'm not sure about, it you can clarify I can try and be of more help.

it is a hospital type bed which has been supplied by the NHS for my elderly mother to use at home.

I have hospital type bed, use a mattress topper (washable) lovely, snug and warm. single size bed, double size topper with elastic strap each corner. then if she has grab rails it will wrap between rails and mattress. strongly recommended. xx
