Can only offer a few points worth considering :
1 Body temperature regulation if changing from hot to cold very quickly an over blanket is easier removed
2 Using a memory foam mattress is not recommended with electric blanket as memory foam reacts to body heat, it would need switching off by a timer or temperature control before sleeping on it.
3 Weight of the blanket if over type as it can be uncomfortable having heavy blankets pressing on painful areas.
My mum has a fleece under blanket from Argos - loves it as she can use it in the bed or on the sofa when it's really cold.
Good reply... other things to consider.
1) single or dual thermostat control for a double bed (two people)
2) timer so you can heat your bed before you get in it and then it goes off after a period of time so you don't get toooooo hot
3) perhaps if it's just your legs/feet that get cold consider buying a single under blanket and put it across the bottom of your bed where just your legs/feet are to keep them warm, but not overhear the top half of your body. Or if its your top half that gets cold - put the blanket towards the middle/top of the bed - this will save on buying cost too. But be sure this is the right things to do as I dont think you can take blankets back unless they are faulty.
Hope this helps.

Hi Jeannie5
I sincerely hope that you are feeling well today? I did not know the answer to this so I had a quick look on answers .com, and this is what they have got on their website, so I hope that this is useful for you:
Do you put a mattress topper under or over an electric blanket?
You put the electric blanket on top of the mattress topper. If you put the mattress topper over the electric blanket you could start a fire. So the electric blanket goes on TOP of the mattress topper.
Can you put an electric blanket on an electric bed?
Yes. But it's always best to read the manufacturer's instructions FIRST because SOME strongly recommend REMOVING all other blankets from on top of the bed before using the electric blanket. Additional bedding can cause the elements to overheat and result in fire. I know people who put blankets on top of their electric blankets and have never had a problem, but PLEASE BE SAFE and read the instructions before using.
Can I use a woollen underlay or mattress protector with my electric blanket?
Yes, if you have a Safe & Sound electric blanket manufactured in 2005 or later, it can be used in conjunction with an underlay, providing it does not have a heavy rubber backing. The underlay or mattress protector can be placed either on top of the electric blanket or underneath it. Please note that your electric blanket may take longer to heat up should you place the underlay over the top of it.
If you have any other Sunbeam electric blanket (i.e. not Safe & Sound) or one manufactured before 2005, you should only place the underlay or mattress protector underneath the electric blanket. Placing a heavy underlay over the top of this type of blanket may trap the heat and inadvertently activate the safety overheat protection system, which cannot be reset.
If using a magnetic underlay, you should check with the supplier of the underlay to ensure its effectiveness when used in conjunction with an electric blanket.
I genuinely hope that is what you mean?
All my hopes and dreams for you

I bought a merino wool blanket and found it great, cool in summer and warm in winter. Also have memory mattress and hot water bottles.
I have mine over the mattress topper. Keep well. x
Thanx Guys most helpful. It can be hard to keep warm sometimes and on other times I have majority of body under duvet to keep warm with one leg out and using duvet as a buffer between knees that hurt if one knee lies over other. How many others sleep this way??
Move about quite a lot trying to balance temperature and find a position that is less painful until running out of energy calls a halt when the leg stiffening /cramps begin.
Trial and error process with whatever is the worst symptom at the time, though I did try a leg pillow for keeping the knees from resting on each other...... fidgeted so much it never really had a chance of working
This has come up before and this is instructions from a memory foam topper provider.
This Memory Foam Warehouse Team.
It is not advised to use an electric blanket on a memory foam mattress or a memory foam topper. This is because the foam is already temperature sensitive, which means putting a hot blanket on top of it may cause more harm than good.
Memory foam is made out of visco elastic material which has the unique ability to conform to your body, rather than the other way around. It is able to do this by responding to your body heat, softening in the areas where you need it to most. Therefore, by placing your electric blanket on top of your foam mattress may cause it to soften even further which will eventually prevent it from giving you the adequate level of support that you need.
For the same reasons it is not advised that heat pads be used on memory foam mattresses as they can also cause damage and affect the mattress’s ability to offer support.
Do not be too disappointed about the fact that you will not longer be able to use yourelectric blanket on your new mattress because in actual fact, you should no longer need to use any additional heating products when you are sleeping on memory foam. This is because the foam will respond to your body heat as you lie on it and quickly warm up.
Hope this helps. X.
