I took advice from members here and asked firmly for a better sedative. I had spent all night worrying, even developing an asthmatic cough because of the stress. The nurses were very kind, listened to my fears and past experiences and informed the doctor of how nervous and tearful I was.
He gave me the choice of coming back and having a barium meal, which in his opinion was not as good, or carrying on and he would do his best to make sure I was comfortable. He sprayed my throat twice with xylocaine and then I had Midazolam and Alfentanil injected into the cannula. I can honestly say within a few seconds I didn't know what was going on, and have little memory of the whole procedure.
I am so relieved it is all over.
He observed polyps, bile, gastritis and took four biopsies, so I am hoping everything is going to be fine.
I had it done because I am anaemic, but as there doesn't seem to be any sore place in my tummy I think I can rule that out as a cause.
If you are in the same situation it is certainly worth speaking up and airing your fears. I have a sore throat and a bit of a headache, also some memory problems, (what's new), but otherwise okay.

Hi Bluebell, well done and thank goodness it's all over for you. So pleased you were able to talk to them and receive the sedation that you needed for this procedure. Take it easy now and have a rest.
I sincerely hope that you are feeling as well as you possibly can be today? I genuinely think that you should be exceedingly proud of yourself. You were so afraid but you faced that fear and came out the other side! You are now in a position whereby you can advise us on how to approach this, I sincerely hope that you are very pleased with yourself.
Hi bluebell I'm o pleased all went well, they always spray my throat. Twice and give me a good dose of the two medications you mention, as the muscle in my throat goes into spasms and they need to relax it, it's funny tho isn't it you can feel hat they are doing yet after it seems like a dream, but I really am so pleased it went off ok and hope the biopsies come back ok as I'm sure from what u say they will...gentle hugs...Dee xx

Oh Bluebell, I'm so pleased it all passed off without causing you too much anxiety. I admire you as I could understand exactly how frightened you were about it.
It may take a few days to overcome the effects of the tube going down, I still remember the feeling your memory problem I am sure will clear soon, it's probably linked ( in my completely non-professional opinion) to some of the sedatives you were given. If it persists, I would have a word with your doctor just for reassurance.

I have only ever had one gastroscopy, all i remember was when they were removing the tube. It wasn't really pleasant, but wasnt long and I was thinking was that it, as i had no memory of it. I think they slightly sedated me. I don't ever remember being told what drugs they used though. I guess pas i have been under general aneasthetic more times than i'd care to remember, i never think to ask... I always ask if i can hold a nurses hand though! It works for me and I'm not embarrased to ask

I would like to thank everyone for their lovely replies and to apologise for not answering sooner.
Today is my first day up since the procedure on Wednesday. After the initial couple of hours when I felt quite well, I had a massive reaction. I was sick, sore throat, chesty cough, dizzy and full blown lupus/fibro flare.
Poor husband took three days off work as he was really worried, he didn't want me to fall, and he said I was talking but with random words that didn't make sense. I don't think I have ever drunk so much water in just a few days. I guess my body doesn't like being messed about.
I have taken extra steroids and had some custard this morning, the first time I've eaten for several days, so I am feeling a little better. Still feel lightheaded and difficult to focus though.
Here's hoping I never have to have another one.!!
