Any budgie experts?

Our little bird is sick. All fluffed up and not eating. He is very old. I know we should try and get him to a vet tomorrow but every bird I have taken before has died anyway and it is such a traumatic experience for them. Anyone who has birds any suggestions?

Hi panda60, I feel for you having a sick pet, it's very upsetting. I don't really know anything about budgies, but thought I'd let you know that I'm thinking of you.

Hope your little bird gets better soon.

Love GJ xx

Morning panda sorry to hear about budgie, how long has he been sick, how old is he and is he sitting on two legs or has he one leg tucked up into his body, you can get a pick me up tonic from a pet shop, it's hard to treat a sick bird and as you say it's traumatic for them when takn out of their environment, I defo would take him in his cage if possible I wouldn't catch him up to put him in a box, if the cage isn't too big to use take him in that and put blanket over his cage to cut out any light or draft.....look forward to your reply ...Dee x

He is about 9 yrs old and has outlived two companions. He took sick last night. Will get him to the vet tomorrow but am hoping for his sake that nature takes its course as he is not distressed and so keeping him warm and quiet.

Hope things take a turn for the better panda, I use to breed budgies and they quite a character aren't they, they do live to a fair old age, that is why I was asking you how he was sitting as a sick bird always perches on both feet dont they where as a healthier bird will always perch on one foot especially whilst sleeping, do feel for you and will be thinking of you, keep us posted wont you...gentle hugs and a handful of sunshine to you...Dee xx

I have had budgies fro years and some have passed away naturally.some have had tumours and one was when my dog caught one(gruesome I know)btu I comforted it whilst it took its last breath.my most recent loss was when one of my birds was on the bottom of the cage and going round in circles and hitting the cage sides.i let it go most of the day and couldn't let it suffer so took it to vets to be put to sleep.it is traumatic btu I don't think you can tell when they are in pain.i wouldn't let it suffer if it goes on too long.i always transport mine in a carrier box.that way they cant injure themselves .

We've had budgies for 19 yrs and they have all gone in different ways. They are such characters and I have felt so sad when they go. We will take him to the vet tomorrow if need be.

Our lovely volunteer sandra is a budgie expert! I will give her a nudge for you and see if she can help :-) I'm sorry you little man isn't good, I sometimes think the trauma of a journey to the vets can be too much for small animals/birds if they aren't well, but I hope that maybe you can do something with the help of our kind members here.

I'm sending positive vibes your way :-)

Sending loving, healing thoughts for your little budgie friend. I am so sorry to hear that he is poorly. I had a budge for my 6th birthday ( a long time ago ) and in those days the vet wouldn't come out to her on a Sunday. A short while after my mother made the call to the vets, she fell off her perch and died. My mum rang the vet back and told him and he wasn't the least bit concerned. She was only 4 years old and I was devastated. I think vets are kinder on the whole these days. I do hope your baby gets treatment if necessary. Otherwise I pray his passing will be peaceful. At least he has had a good life with you to have reached old age and he will know how much he has been loved. Please let us know how he is if you can bear to write again. I don't know if you have ever heard of The Ralph Site? It is a wonderful site where people share their photos of their beloved pets and where you can post memorials to them. It is run by a vet who understands just how close our bond with our pets is. It is very supportive. Comforting hugs, Saskia XX

Thanks. We have had hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits and budgies over the years and it is so sad when they go. Thanks for letting me know about the Ralph site. I hadn't heard of them.x

Have a look at The Ralph Site when you get a moment. It is a lovely site and you may find it comforting. I shall continue to keep your little budgie in my thoughts and prayers. Comforting hugs Saskia XX
