What has happened to my taste buds?
hi I can relate to that just noticed in the last month or so A/V a really funny bloody mentally tast in me mouth also lips an tounge I take nortriptyline and have done for months but this is new thing.
Just to add my imput--I have totally lost my sense of smell and my taste buds are all but gone, all since the onset of Fibro! All I now get is from strong 'tastes' is a sort of 'hottish/burning feeling at the back of my throat--but I still would not know what I was eating.
Its very dangerous now not being able to smell most things and a total displeasure when eating as everything tastes of cardboard.
Sorry to not be more positive.
Wow Jo-lyn! That must be awful!! So,I should be grateful that it's only a few things that taste weired, can't imagine not being able to taste at all! Much love and thanks for your reply.
Since your post was 4 years ago...not sure if you will see this....but I'm praying you do. I was recently diagnosed with fibro...obviously had it for years....but more and more symptoms kept happening. Now I'm a little scared cause I cant taste anything. And I cant smell anything. Did this happen to you suddenly or was it slowly over a period of time?
Hello
My taste has gone a bit non descript but finds I am very sensitive to smells, and noise.
Is x
Just been googling Wikipedia! Apparently this is quite a common trait in f.m! All the senses become heightened! Yet another one to add to the list!!
Hi suffolklass, I have exactly the same symptoms as you although my sense of taste has heightened too! This heightened awareness of smell is driving me crazy! Everywhere I go my nose is assaulted with, mainly, bad smells & most perfumes now smell awful! We have cats & dogs, so you can imagine what it's like for me in my own house! I say to my husband & my son "can you smell that!" They then look at me with pity in their eyes, as they slowly shake their heads & I notice that they exchange a quick glance at each other, which plainly says "oh no, here we go again!". My heightened sense of taste is quite a burden too! I can taste salt In everything, in food that it's not supposed to be in! I can taste it in chocolate biscuits, chocolate, bread, ordinary biscuits ( I could go on!). I also have a real problem with noise, I just cannot stand it when I'm in the supermarket & there are kids running about shouting, mothers shouting at the same kids & what sound like 10 babies crying at once! I've got nothing against kids, mothers or babies (I'm a mother of five) I just wish it wasn't such a free-for-all to shout, scream &, in some cases, shriek like banshees! I don't go there very much, not just because of the noise but the fish counter & the smell of the chickens being cooked makes me want to discretely vomit into my handbag! Sorry for the tirade, it's just nice to know I'm not the only one trapped in a remorseless, crazy & bizarre world!
Lovely warm hugs,
Tracey.
Oh dear, welcome to fibro! I find my tastebuds can be all over the place. Sometimes things taste fine, others they taste just too much - too sweet etc, others they taste completely off and others they just don't really taste. Hopefully you'll find things calm down and you can start enjoying your favourite tipple again soon x
Hi Ninjananna,
I have found that my general sense of smell is heightened, and living with two boys this is not a good thing (also really sensitive to bright light)
I have also found that some days things just taste awful - others everything is fine, it is wierd but as I am quickly learning from the lovely people in this group - to be expected.
I do however have a cuationary note - my ability to smell chlorine gas is gone, and this is not an FM thing - went a few years ago due to an incident at work (scientist) and this for me is quite a dangerous thing, I can literally be standing next to fuming chlorine and smell nothing - my throat and eyes will burn but I smell nada.
So although it is probably just one of those fm things, I personally would recommend keeping a diary, just so that you can double check with the docs when you next see them, make sure it is not a side effect of meds - which they might possibly do something about.
currently I just ask number one son to try my food / drinks and tell me if they really do taste as awful as they seem to on some days - he now refers to himslef as the royal food taster
I cant take any alcohol with the meds i have.
All food taste different to me although i put that down to just over a year ago i lost my sense of smell, so nothing is pleasant really until the food is highly spiced xx
