Can you take too much vitamin D?.

Like so many others I am low on vitamin D. My doctor put me on 50,000 IU to take once a week. I would think I should be taking D once a day, not a hight dose once a week. Comments?

Hello Mark5177,

I can understand your concern, however I think you'll find this dosage is quite common.

If you are ever worried about the dosage of medications you can always ring the Pharmacy you collected them from or if closed NHS Direct can help with queries about medication. Please see link below

I hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I know I will probably have to contact my MD but what confused me was what it say on the bottle. Each refill I get just 4 pills but the pharmacy is refilling it once a week. The bottle says, "take 1 capsule by mouth every day X 7 days." But I was sure the doctor told me to take 1 each week. So you can see how it is confusing.

Hi, my consultant recmmends 400units vit d daily and 100mg of vit c as well daily but we dont retain vit d & c during winter which is why we get such terrible cramps and spasms, but ring yr gp to check and read out the dosage on the label to him/her and ask for clarification, most will tell you over the phone. You may be on this dosage as your vit d is rock bottom, it will take a good month to kick in and feel better. Also ask if you should be on any fish oil or Glucosamine with chondroitin to help? You may not need all of these but its worth looking after your joints long term anyway.

Not what you're looking for?
