Hi, is it safe to take Co-Codamol, Butrans patches and Amitriptyline? I worry doing the pain relief, but I'm always still in pain.

You shouldn't take Co-codamol with the Butran Patch (although this will depend on the dose) but Amitriptyline is fine with either/or. Butrans patches are morphine, which is similar to codeine, thus you risk overdose. Try just paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory instead of the Co-codamol.

Although just a piece of advise, codeine/morphine type drugs do not work well in Fibro patients. We don't process the pain relief properly in our brains, so we only get a very short relief (for me 10 mins max per dose). You may want to try Tramadol instead, which can be used with Amitriptyline, and if you still choose to use, codeine or morphine. Hope this helps. Feel free to give me shout if you need any info on drugs, Im a med student so happy to help. xxx

Yikes Zoe, I hope you've got an up to date BNF ;) Co-codamol and Butrans Patches are fine together with both at full strength x.

Hi Linda

I'm on Co-codamol, Butrans patches and was on amitriptyline (but they gave me rages so was changed to gabapentin), I've been taking these for over a year now and have had no problems, I'm also on anti depressants and I can also take naproxen with the above meds. There are days that all of my meds give me fantastic pain relief for a few hours, but there are also days that it only just takes the edge off - it depends on what the weather is like, what I've been doing, stresses etc.

If your doctor has prescribed all of your meds and your still concerned why not have a chat with them and let them know your concerns.

Gentle hugs xx

Hi, just wanted to say that my gp won't give tramadol at the same time as butrans patches as they cancel out each other, so I'm on butrans, gabapentin, amitriptyline and paracetamol. That's just his opinion though and meds are changing all the time.

Hope your pain eases soon :)

I think you're safe enough with this, Linda, but if it's not relieving your pain, it seems a shame to keep taking medicines which may have side effects.

Time, maybe to return to your GP for a medication review. It's most important to have adequate pain relief for proper management of fibro.

Pain clinic told me to just take paracetamol and brufen with the butrans patch (I'm on 20mcg). I hope your GP manages to find the right medication for you. Gentle hugs. Becky x
