Has anyone had an ovarian cyst delay your ivf cycle? Looking for anyone to share their experiences, specifically how long did the cyst take to go away and what did you do to help it reduce?
I’ve been doing down regulation for two weeks now, had my baseline scan last Friday 26/04 when I was suppose to start stims, but they could see a 14mm cyst. My period hadn’t actually started by then so they were hopeful it would reduce with my period. They told me to keep down regulating and went back on Monday 29/04 but the cyst was still there, and a tiny bit bigger even though my period was on day 2. They did a blood test and that confirmed the cyst was functional as my oestradiol levels were raised.
I’ve been told to just keep down regulating and they’ll check again on Friday. I’m so scared that it might not have reduced by then. I don’t think I can stomach any more delays!
Anyone experienced similar?
I read a hot compress can help so I am using hot water bottle on the side where the cyst is. Any other tips?

Hi there, Had sort of a similar experience and my doctor treated the cyst that I had during my egg retrieval.
Not sure if this would apply to every cyst but he said that mine was easy to treat during egg retrieval and it wouldn't cause any issues with implantation etc.
Hope this helps. Good luck with yout ivf journey 🤞😉
Mother Nature is sometimes a bit slow in returning the ovaries to their "quiet state " [no cysts over a certain size ] This why baseline scans are carried out before each treatment cycle and if cyst is present treatment is delayed till it has resolved [ been absorbed ] So hope good news after Friday's scan
hey, I have just completed a three cycle package and I had to delay in between each cycle because of cysts 🙄 I cried the first time and then expected it the following. For me, the cysts disappeared by my next period. They didn’t offer scans within a few days to see if the cysts had disappeared, they just checked at following day 2/3 baseline scan (but I wasn’t taking any medication in this time either so perhaps different for you). Purely for informational purposes - they mentioned it could take up to 3 months to disappear but mine always went by the next bleed and I have the worst luck 😄
I hope they clear up quickly but just wanted to share as this was one of my main frustrations with the process!! Xx
Thanks for sharing. I assume you were on short protocol then? That's the one plus side to being on long protocol is it buys you time to wait for the cyst to go down before starting the stim injections.
I did have the same thing happen to me on my first cycle which was short protocol. Luckily my clinic scanned me again on day 2 of my cycle a few hours before I was due to start the meds and could see it was starting to collapse so I was able to go ahead rather than delay a month. I am just nervous as this one had got bigger on day 2 of my cycle so worried it might be a persistent one!
I feel like the most unlucky person so mine will probably take 3 months to clear up, lol!
Hi, i had a cyst ,my doctor put me on the pill to rest the ovaries, hot water bottle is a good idea, i did that as well. I don't remember exactly how long it took , but i am now 36 weeks pregnant from the cycle after the cyst. Good luck x
Oh congratulations! How long did you have to go on the pill for? I hope that the down reg medication I’m on is resting the ovaries already so hopefully won’t need the pill aswell!
Normally, in the clinic where I work when patients have cysts we check to see if they go away with a bleed which they often do. If not, we will keep you down regulated and do a cyst aspiration (simular to an egg collection procedure) a couple of days prior to starting stimulation. This is because if there's a cyst there it can hinder follicle growth.
Thanks for the reply, for some reason my clinic say they don’t do aspirations. I have another scan today and if the cyst is still there I will see if I can find another clinic in London who may be able to offer the aspiration so I can get on with the cycle.
