I wanted to write this post to give you hope that miracles can … and do happen. I got my first ever positive result today after my fifth transfer. I’m 41 and am using my own eggs and it has been a long journey to get here. I know it’s very early days but I’m so happy and hoping for the best.
I initially reported the problem to my GP aged 39. They sent me for blood tests (and my partner for semen analysis) and by the time these were all done and referral made I was over 40. I live in the “wrong” postcode, meaning I didn’t qualify for NHS funding. I found this a great injustice, given some NHS trusts provide funding up to the age of 42.
So we decided to go ahead as private patients at the same NHS clinic I was initially referred to. The care I received was exceptional. My consultant (the clinical lead of the unit) performed all my scans, egg retrievals and transfers. He was contactable by phone around the clock. I still can’t believe how lucky I was to have him by my side on this difficult journey.
I would say the only difference to a private clinic was that they practice “evidence-based treatment”, meaning they would not perform some procedures / tests that private clinics offer, where there is a lack of evidence they work.
We managed to freeze 9 blastocysts over two cycles. Quality was average to poor (to be expected at my age). But somewhat amazingly I did have one 5AA graded embryo (my fourth transfer). Sadly, that transfer was not successful and after this failed transfer I was devastated and thought I might never see a positive result.
After my fourth transfer I was referred for a hysteroscopy (ladies - do ask for local anaesthetic if you are ever having one in an outpatient setting). Because I was already in an NHS setting, this happened very quickly. This was great as I didn’t want to lose any more valuable time.
I went ahead with my fifth transfer and was having a few strange symptoms. I’ve learnt not to think too much into them as most are caused by progesterone. What was new this time is that my nipples looked different. I was dreading test day (today!) but for the first time ever, I saw the double lines - I am pregnant!
I know a lot can still happen but I’m absolutely delighted and wanted to share my story with this community, and especially those of you over 40, to give you hope it is possible!!
