Is it possible to get pregnant whilst taking buserelin?

I'm currently going through my first cycle of IVF. I started taking Buserelin on May 30th. It's now June 18th, and I've not had a bleed yet. I've spoken to my nurse and she said it could be one of two things. Either, the endometrial lining isn't very thick and there's not really anything there to shed, OR, I could already be pregnant. I'm almost certain I am not pregnant.

I've had all of normal peroid symptoms for three weeks now. I was meant to start a bleed last Monday, but nothing. However, I've still got spotty skin, very sore and full boobs, constipated etc.

My day 21, and baseline scan, is Tuesday 20th June. I'm also meant to start my Gonal F injection on this day also, but I dont know if that still happens?

I'm wondering if any others have gone through something similiar? It would be great to get some advice or an idea on what happens next.

hi lovely, I’ve seen a few ladies on here who found out they were pregnant while downregging. I think it happened to RhinoCat If I’m not mistaken? Perhaps check some of her old posts.

In any case, I would do a home pregnancy test today just to check. Good luck! xx

Hello! Oh interesting, so it can happen. I thought she was joking when she said it, like surely not. The only thing that makes me strongly believe I'm not, is that I've been trying naturally for four years, and have done possibly everything I could to get pregnant. So surely I wouldn't get naturally pregnant now?

I will buy a test and do one tomorrow I think, just to confirm and put my mind at ease.

Thank you!! H x

it’s definitely possible! Happened to me, sadly miscarried at 9 weeks and no one would tell me whether the Buserelin caused it. Seems others may have had success but just wanted to say that it’s definitely possible. Like you I had ttc for a long time without luck so this was surprising to me! All the best to you xx

Hi Nenad, it’s not that they won’t tell you, but that they don’t know. Sadly, there’s no way of knowing what causes a miscarriage. Even with testing, most of the time a reason isn’t found. I did find a study into buserelin pregnancies and it didn’t show any apparent risks so probably it wasn’t that: citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/docum...

Hope that helps reassure you. I’ve had three miscarriages and I know how horrible it is and how easy it is to get trapped in a cycle of trying to find the answer. Usually they’re a one-off and there is no answer, unfortunately.

Hi Olive, thanks so much for taking the time to respond to me and to send across this helpful information. Nothing can change the past of course but I found it pretty upsetting when I read an article saying that spontaneous pregnancy during downreg would need progesterone supplementation, which is something my doctor didn’t do.

Completely agree with you that I’ll never know whether it was the buserelin that caused it or whether the lack of progesterone did, or anything else! Buserelin essentially thins the womb lining so the fact that my doctor didn’t apply the basic logic of offering supplementation to improve my lining is baffling. I learned all this after the fact.

Again thanks so much for offering your insight. I’ve had 4 miscarriages in total (3 chemicals after this one) and yes it’s heartbreaking. Sorry you’ve had several miscarriages too xx

I’d double check and do a pregnancy test but for me I didn’t have a bleed when I was on Buserelin. They upped my dose to try and cause one but it didn’t work for a period, I did however shed quite a bit of clear discharge and after a couple of days with a higher dose the measurements were correct and was able to continue with the treatment x

You can definitely get pregnant on buserelin and in fact low dose buserelin has been used to help people get pregnant. Definitely take a test before starting any other hormones, although your clinic should advise this anyway and also usually would not tell you to start anything until after a bleed. Xx

Hi!This happened to me on my first cycle - I am currently 14 weeks pregnant!

Couldn't believe my eyes when I tested and was actually so furious that the nurse suggested I might be pregnant after a 2 year struggle.

I went in to the clinic the next day for HCG test and stopped meds immediately

Feel free to message me if you want to chat, but you defo need to test x

Hey how long were you on buserelin for before you tested positive ….

I’ve been taking buserelin 0.5 ml for 8 days and found out pregnant they told me to keep on the meds when I first tested 3 days ago but I’m stopping now

HeyI think probably a week or 10 days. I went in for my first appointment to check lining and when my period hadn't yet been that's when they told me to test, which I did that evening. I stopped meds straight away, went in for a blood test and was then told to use the pessaries before going in for an 8 week scan

My miracle bubba is now 6 weeks old :)

Wishing you all the luck x

Oh thank goodness I’ve been making myself sick because this is a total miracle for us. I haven’t ovulated in 6 years

Don't panic, they told me it does happen very very occasionally with long protocol. Are you going into the clinic soon? X
