Progesterone advice

I had my progesterone levels checked today for my first FET transfer on Thursday.

I’m currently taking 2 x cyclogest pessaries a day.

The nurse said if my levels are low then I need to decide which progesterone injection to take.. she said I’d have the choice between 2..

1) Lubion which is inject in my stomach but is dearer.

2) An inter muscular injection I inject at the top of my bum.. she said this is more painful but a lot cheaper? It began with ‘P’ but can’t remember the exact name.

Does anyone have experience of trying both these types of injection and would they recommend one over the other?

Does anyone know rough cost difference?

Just want to be prepared if I get the phone call to say I need to make a decision which to use it if it is low.

Thank you

Hi, I use the intramuscular option. Our clinic recommended it over the one you can inject in your tummy as apparently it has proven to be more effective. From memory I think it was at least double the cost for the alternative.

There maybe information online to compare the differences and outcomes of using both meds if you have a look?

I inject into my thigh, but am going to try bum on next cycle. It is painful as the needle is huge but not so much where you can’t do it. I administered all of mine myself. I found sitting down and squeezing leg muscle to find the right location then relaxing the leg and not putting any weight on it helped. I’ve heard the same thing for bum too as helps keep muscle relaxed.

Good luck!

Hi Kt. If you decide to go for the cheaper option in yout thigh, ask pharmacist for lignocaine gel to numb the area before injecting. You don’t rub it in, leave it in a big blob for a while, then wipe it off. Good luck. Diane

Hi. I had the injection in the bum. Admittedly it is painful and your partner has to administer it as you won’t be able to do it yourself. It’s not that painful (odd one would be a bit more) when it is administered despite the size of the needle it’s the muscle afterwards that goes extremely painful and seems to “knot and tighten up”. I do have a few tips I gained along the way to try and lessen the pain.

Lie on your stomach on a bed and keep your leg and bottom completely flaccid and relaxed, any tension will make it worse. Rub the progesterone in your hands before using and put it in your bra for a good few minutes before so it’s warm. Some people said going for a walk straight after the injection helped with preventing the tightening of the muscle later, I found this didn’t help and the best thing for me was sitting on a small heated blanket all night for 3/4 hours straight away after it’s done xx

Hi… Thank you all for replying and the tips. I’m leaning more towards the Lubion as I’m single and having to do the injections myself plus and I also work shifts so it sounds like the inter-muscular option would be quite limiting with me working different hours everyday.

I take Lubion, it’s easy to administer just stings afterwards, so I find that pressing down and rubbing the injection site after you’ve done it helps to alleviate some of it. Good luck! X
