Fluid/Fibroid in uterus

Hi All, I wrote not so long ago about the clinic finding fluid in my uterus after my first cycle of ivf. Due to this I wasn't allowed a fresh transfer (understandable) and it was a freeze all cycle with 2 embies.

I have gone back for further scans. On 10 Nov I had a 3D scan which showed the fluid was still there. They believe this could be from stimming. I then returned on 22 Nov for another scan, as I was told to give it a little more time. Shockingly, I have now been told/showed there appears to be a fibroid poking right in the centre of my uterus!!!!! As well as the fluid!! The nurse was very shocked and so was I to say the least.

I have suffered with DIE for 7 years, had a lap in July 2021 in prep for ivf. Never have I ever been told during that time I've had a fibroid and now within 12 days, one has developed, right where it shouldn't be.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar? Is this due to the stimming? I know fibroids are fed by estrogen. Am I naive to think as quick as the pesky thing come, it could also go away!? Alternatively, the clinic said I might have to get this investigated and go back to my GP or go private. Just waiting in the nurse to meet with the consultant today and confirm.

I would appreciate any views, as I'm doing this journey privately and no one I know has been through this.x

Hi Sophsta. Sorry to hear this. Looks like you need to speak to another specialist and see whether any treatment is needed. The finroid could be being fed by hormones, which may reduce once the stims are stopped. you will have to see what is said. The fluid may need to be drained too, in case it prevents an embryo from implanting. Fingers crossed all is soon sorted. Diane

Thank you for your reply Diane. I was only on stims for 12 days, so it's been just over 4 weeks now and this has happened. I will update once I know what the next stage is x

Hi Sophsta,

My partner experienced a similar thing in October 2016 when we began IVF - only she didn’t have fluid, but did develop polyps (which she never had before). Fresh transfer was abandoned & we had 2 blasts frozen. Our clinic referred us to the GP to arrange for the polyps to be removed before we could try FET. We saw the GP who recommended paying for the initial consultation privately, but to have the actual treatment on the NHS, as the wait for the consultation alone was approximately 6 months at the time. We did this and had our private consultation just before Christmas 2016, which was worth paying for as she was then straight on the NHS waiting list.

She had the polyps removed in March 2017 under local anaesthetic, and we arranged to start medicated FET in June 2017. Unfortunately, internal scan showed there was still remnants of a polyp there, and so we were advised not to continue with the cycle due to the likelihood of the meds causing the polyp to grow. We were referred back to the GP and waited patiently for another appointment for removal, which took a bit longer this time (I believe is due to having a slightly more invasive procedure the second time around as DP was under general anaesthetic for that one).

At the beginning of March 2018 the polyp was removed again, and we decided to go straight in for FET this time, so as soon as AF arrived after the removal we contacted our clinic. No polyps were seen on the internal scan this time round, and 1x frosty was finally transferred on May 4th 2018. She will be 3 in January!! 🙂

Hi DisneyJL10

Thank you so much taking the time to reply and sharing your experience and many congratulations on your baby girl 🤗

I was very relaxed about this whole experience (well tried to be) as I know nothing is guaranteed but I never expected a fibroid to pop up in the centre of my uterus within a matter of days!!!

The clinic have written a report with the findings, along with the ultrasound images for my GP...I am hoping the GP will refer me straight away. What are your thoughts? I'm guessing your partner had a hysteroscopy procedure first time, then laporoscopy? Thanks, Soph x

Hey I am kind of different as I have known about my fibroids and done six rounds of ivf with them.. but always had a failed cycle or miscarriage. I then went to a second clinic for a donor cycle and the first thing they did was a 3D sis on me and found that two of my fibroids were poking into the uterus and despite what my previous clinic had said about them not causing any problems this clinic referred me to a fibroid specialist. (This is all private by the way).

I saw him within ten days of the referral and had an MRI two weeks later then saw him 10 days later. He said I had two large fibroids outside the uterus, a LOT in the wall but none of them would interfere with a pregnancy BUT he thought it would be madness going ahead with transfer with the two poking into my womb as my chance of MC was over 60% compared to maybe 10% if I didn’t have them.

I’ve now been referred for surgery but due to the sheer number I need to have open surgery and then wait six months before starting ivf again

The good news is they can often deal with smaller fibroids via hysteroscopy - I’ve had several shaved off that way before and it’s a really quick and simple op and you can normally do ivf again within three months

Although people say fibroids might shrink after treatment this has never happened to me - they’ve just kept growing!

Hope that helps - shout if you have any questions xx

Thank you for sharing Daisy1245.

The clinic are of the same opinion, in that they will not ever put an embryo in with fluid let alone a pesky fibroid (probably due to a risk of MC but they don't say too much)

I would be very interested in knowing who you saw privately. I've waited patiently for a long time with the NHS and I'm not sure I can wait much longer, in fear of my Endo returning and causing further problems/delays. Now with the added stress of a fibroid(s) which may continue to grow 🤦‍♀️

I really wish you all the best with your op xx

I completely agree with Daisy1245, I have never heard that fibroids shrink with treatment. Also, the size and location of the fibroid can affect IVF and the outcome of a pregnancy. On the other hand lots of women also have successful pregnancies with fibroids. It all depends on size and location. So always best to check with an expert.

On a personal note, I have multiple fibroids and one that was so large that like Daisy1245, I had to have an open myomectomy before I could commence with IVF but was given 3 months to recover because they did not breach the uterine cavity. There were other fibroids that the clinics said were outside the uterus so I was given the go ahead to commence IVF. I had 4 rounds of IVF and I don’t think they grew much during stims thankfully although one was slightly distorting the shape of my uterus. When it was last measured, it was approximately 3cms

I eventually got my BFP and currently 30 weeks pregnant. A couple of my fibroids have grown really large due to the pregnancy hormones so I have a larger than normal bump but thank God the pregnancy is progressing well. As my pregnancy has progressed, the large fibroids have been pushed to one side. One is beginning to show signs of disintegration.

I hope everything gets resolved for you to commence with IVF. All the best 🙏🏾

Hi JoyfulStar, thank you for taking your time to reply and congratulations on your pregnancy too ☺️

I have an appointment with my GP this Friday. I am hoping to get referred and put on the waiting list straight away, as the clinic have given me the ultrasound images. Oddly, when I was at my last scan appt, the nurse mentioned going private for any treatment of the fibroid to speed things up BUT when she called me after speaking to the consultant, I was told to go back to my GP instead. That's concerned me a little 🤔

My suspected fibroid is definitely breaching my cavity and I don't think it could be in a worse position. But I am thinking positive thoughts.

All the best x

Do you have private medical cover? You can still be referred to be treated privately by your GP x

Sadly not 😒 I will wait to see what the GP says on Friday. There is a possibility of paying to go private for the treatment but I don't know what procedure I need x

Good luck! Hope you get referred at least x
