Calling all Prontogest experts!

Hello lovely ladies,

Following on from my progesterone blood test today after transfer I’m now on prontogest injections every other day. This isn’t my first rodeo with these awful injections but haven’t done them for a while. Any top tips from anyone on them? My husband just did my first of this cycle and it was so painful getting the needle in it reduced me to tears. This has actually never happened before. However any tips at all would be gratefully received. Already do massage and move about afterwards etc. Last time my bottom was so sore by OTD that I couldn’t sleep as couldn’t lie on it!

Thanks wonderful ladies 🙏

They are awful!!

I find the below helps:

1) Ice the area beforehand

2) Make sure you have the right area (upper quarter), never in the middle

3) Make the area taut before injecting

4) Stick it in quickly, don’t do it slowly.

Good luck xx

Thanks so much for replying. I’ve never bothered to ice it before as being lazy but I’m going to start now. I’ve iced before other injections so I know it works. So taut rather than pinching the area like other injections? Thank you so much 🙏x

in reply tohifer

Definitely taut - stick it in like a dart (quick, short, sharp) then slowly release the mediation. Its muscular so very different from fat injection (tummy needs to be pinched, not butt!)

My husband practiced on an orange which helped - the quicker it goes in the less painful. Make sure skin is taut and never go in the fatty middle area - should be upper quarter.

Let me know how you get on ❤️

Yep got the area sorted thank you 👍. Right taut it is! Clearly a little out of practice on this. Thanks so much for all the advice xx

Ouch!! I've not done these ones but ice is meant to help to numb the area and warm the solution first....stick it in your bra to get it to room temp. One of my cycle buddies had them, she may be able to offer advice.... Hidden .xx

Oh dear poor you! Yep I know them well, I could barely walk after 😱I think the main issue is the actual progesterone entering the muscle (once hubby masters the injection bit- ice, taut skin and sharp insertion).... don’t forget to draw back the needle to check whether you’ve hit a blood vessel (if so, change syringe). The progesterone is in oil so the oil is quite thick and builds up in the muscle hence why the pain. Not much can be done about it, but it helped me to put a warm compress after and do a couple of squats to activate the muscle....Sorry love, it’s not fun but it’s for a great cause ❤️🤞🏻Hang in there!!! Xxx

Thank you. Yes hubby always draws the needle back to check blood. He hit a capillary once when drawing the needle out and blood literally shot everywhere (the emergency nurse said it was fine and can happen sometimes 😳). I think I’m going to start icing before and heating afterwards. I always used to do lots of flexing of the buttocks afterwards 😂 but squats is a good idea too. Thanks a lot for the feedback xx

Ya, my doctor told me this was the best form of progesterone. It was a difficult time, but it got us there in the end!

Feeling ok, so far x

Hi. I warm up the vial. I find the warmer the oil the thinner it is. I usually make a hot water bottle and put the hot water bottle on top of the vial while hubby gets needles ready extra. I have use a numbing (only because we have it) then he just darts it in really quickly and massage the area. I pop the hot water bottle on the area for a few minutes afterwards. It’s a bloody process! Good luck lovely. Exciting times

Wow you have a well oiled process going on there (no pun intended 😂). Thanks so much for detailing it all, that’s so helpful. I do have Emla cream actually. Do you use that? How long do you let the cream absorb before injecting the needle? I’m definitely starting up with the hot water bottles. Also I hadn’t actually put 2 and 2 together to equal the warmer the oil, the thinner it is and therefore the easier it is to inject/ distribute in the bum etc. Thanks so much 🙏xx

Lol! Even our dog sighs at the process! yes Emla is the cream just a few minutes. It numbs quite quickly. Also when numb you can massage the oil in properly so no oil bumps. Remember to alternate sides. I had a B12 injection a few weeks ago and the nurse told me to use my index finger on my hip bone to and thumb to work out where the injection site should be for intramuscular injections .. hope that helps...

Thank you. You too. I have 4 pessaries every day too. Don’t think my body likes absorbing progesterone very much! Fingers crossed for us both 😘xx

I’ve not had injections before of progesterone so this is a new experience for me they took my blood levels on day of transfer and have told me to continue them until I have a heart beat I’m not even half way through the 2ww yet and my stomach is already a pin cushion, fingers crossed for us both 🤞🤞 xx

Oh hun. I feel for you I really do. I’m not doing injections in my stomach now but I’ve done A LOT for many egg collections and I bruise like a peach! There are lots of helpful tips on this thread re the progesterone injections though (which for me are the worst). Hopefully you can pick up some tips xx
