Prontogest injections

Hi there,

Is anyone on prontogest that needs to be injected into the bum? The nurse told me that it can be injected into the thigh muscle if I have to but they didn’t seem that keen! (Just for clarity this is an intramuscular injection). Currently I need my husband to inject for me but I want to go away in the 2ww so was hoping to be able to do thigh injections myself. Anyone doing this/ has done this?

Any experience, as always, would be very helpful. Thank you 🙏

Hi hifer You can also inject yourself in the thigh - my clinic showed me and I did it myself, it's totally fine.

You can find videos about this on Youtube, or you could ask your clinic to show you once.

Thank you. My clinic did show me how to do it but they just didn’t seem that keen for thigh injections for some reason (maybe I’m being overly sensitive!) Did you do it this way for a while? X

Hi hifer

Yes, my clinic's first recommendation was to have my partner do it in the bum, then they offered for me to come to the clinic every other day for them to do it for me, and then I explained that my partner was travelling etc, so they tried to teach me how to inject myself in the bum, but I wasn't flexible enough, so they taught me how to inject myself in the thigh. I'm not sure why they just don't teach this to everyone from the start, everybody would save a lot of time.

I’m so with you on that!! I don’t know why they don’t do that either. My husband is travelling with work next week too so I’d have to find a better solution anyway. Plus I inject at 8pm and they aren’t open then! Thanks for the feedback x

Hi, I was on Lentogest I think similar - my husband did all but one in my bum and I did one as he was away - I found it ok as it’s in the top of your bum and I used a big mirror to find the location . My clinic sent me some images info if you want me to send onto you - please pm me

I think the thought of doing it yourself is worse than actually doing it! Let me know. X

My OH is useless with needles and I’m also taking Prontogest daily. I therefore do it myself, and use a face mirror on my toilet seat so I can administer it. I also mark the areas so it’s easier for me to get the right zone.

My clinic has a similar response in terms of their preferred location being my bum. So I just persevered with that, I figured there must be a reason they are pushing me to do it there.

You may already do this but tips I found really helped was to warm up the viral by putting it in my bra beforehand, massaging and bum exercises afterwards.

I agree there must be a reason why they prefer the bum!! It’s not so much the injection by myself or the massaging and exercising etc after but my clinic is insistent that once the needle is first in, that you draw it back a little to check for blood (and the fact that you haven’t hit a blood vessel) before injecting the rest!! That’s all quite hard to do by yourself! Will give it a go though as it might be easier than I think. Thanks a lot for your input xx P.S my other half isn’t good with needles either. When he first had a blood test at the clinic many moons ago, he fainted 🤦‍♀️
