Icsi they select the sperm from a sample and inject it straight into the egg. Ivf they just leave the sperm to do they’re own thing in with the retrieved eggs.

Hi brendalv. IVF is used when the sperm are good quality, then once eggs are collected, the sperm are added in a dish to fertilise the eggs on their own. ICSI is used If there is a problem with sperm, not many, poor swimmers or bad head shape, they then select the best ones to inject one into one egg at a time. Sometimes used if IVF has failed because the sperm cannot get into egg to fertilise it. Some “shells” can be tough. The preparation is the same for both IVF and ICSI. Hope that explains the basics for you. Diane
