Donor IVF successful so far... keeping my hopes high for the FET and following gestation now.

Well, finally we moved onto donor conception and my younger sister opted to be the donor. Things have been going pretty smooth so far and fast paced. We're not going for fresh transfer. My specialist gave us options between fresh transfer and FET with genetic testing.... we opted for the latter. We're not ready to take chances. In spite of a couple of reschedules we've managed to get 9 good quality PGS cleared 5-day blasts... should last me long if I'm to fail again a couple of times.

Since I'm to start my progesterone on 12th I wanted a quick help from women who have had twin transfers or been considering it. The internet says it does improve the chances of success. However, I'm a little confused as whether it's the egg that defines twin implantation or the uterus. And what are the chances of both the embryos to latch on ... considering the fact the egg comes from a 30 year old with great vitals and I'm 36 with low AMH and irregularities in the lining?

The Dr also mentioned that just in case the first FET fails they'll either have to go for assisted implantation methods. :O I hope it doesn't escalate to it though.

TIA

Hi Rosie, thank a ton for all those good wishes! However, I'm not going through a surrogacy and just donor conception... so I'm not sure what you meant by helping you with surrogacy. We'll I hope you do find a good clinic as that's very important no matter whichever assisted fertility process you're going through. My RE has been a real help TBH, I wasn't considering PGS but she explained thoroughly about the pros and cons as well as made us talk to the embryologist and then asked us take our call. I mean who else will tell you what's gonna be the right way if it's not the RE or the specialist team. I'd say it's better you got to know about the frailties of the clinic you mentioned even before you got started... has it been later on in the process you would have had lesser choices than just to abandon the process and move onto other clinic. Wish you Good luck!

Hi, I’ve just been given the choice of transferring 1 or 2 embies for my upcoming FET (a choice I didn’t think I would get on the NHS so was shocked when I was asked at my consultation). My OH and I have opted for 2 to be transferred - if my chances of implantation are doubled, I’m all for it. And we’d be happy if both manage implant. I’m not sure about the technicalities I’m afraid, but wanted to share my thoughts xx keeping everything crossed for you 🤞🏼🤞🏼 and sending lots of love and positive vibes 💕

Oh I'm on the same boat I guess... on twin transfer but still considering information and sort of other's experiences with it. Honestly, even our decision was quick on going for it, knowing that it improves the chances of success. I guess, we'll have to do some new plannings and savings but are equally excited about the possibility of twins. :D Only, I'm a little scared that maybe my uterus isn't that strong and give up with the load of full gestation with twins. You know how failures teach you to question everything and my MCs too only adds to the fear of "what if's". I do have some irregularities in my uterine lining though it's not an established endometrial Hyperpalsia yet. The RE said it could develop into one if left unattended but reassures at this point it' doesn't pose any threat to full term even with twins. They've been monitoring my lining too so I guess there's nothing to worry really. I'm really happy to find a twin-transfer buddy in here. Well when is your FET scheduled? Thanks for reaching out. I hope everything just goes well with us to end up getting pregnant this time and preferably with twins! :D

My guess is that if the docs thought you were at risk, they probably wouldn't advise you to have 2 embies put back in so fingers crossed your uterus will be able to handle it. There's just so much to think of on this journey!!

I'm currently waiting for AF to come and once it does, I'll start buserelin injections on day 21 for roughly 2 weeks and then start on oestrogen patches and finally progesterone pessaries 5 days prior to ET. so (if AF comes any time soon - I'm already a few days late), transfer should be towards the end of Aug/beginning of Sept. By the sounds of your post, your ET will be before mine - do you know roughly when? Sending you the best of luck - I definitely second what you say...hopefully this is our time and we both end up with healthy twins! :-) xxx

Hi Becca,

We were offered the choice of 1 or 2 at transfer in our current donor egg cycle. We chose to go with 2 and I’m so glad we did. We’re nearly 14 weeks along with a single baby. Obviously one took and one didn’t and after so much heartache and so many years of trying, my husband and I would have been devastated if we’d had only one transferred and that was the one that didn’t take. We’ve still got 6 high quality 5 day blasts on ice at the clinic. Fingers crossed everything continues to progress well with this pregnancy and we will be considering a sibling in a couple of years. We’ve both agreed we will transfer two again and run the risk of multiples as it’s worth it for us. From what I was told by our consultant it’s a combination of the egg and your uterus that decides a successful implantation, but a really good quality embie might survive and implant properly in a less than perfect lining where a damaged embie may not be strong enough and vice versa.

Wow that's a wonderful news, congratulations on your pregnancy! :) Thanks for sharing your story... you're experience making me believe we made the right call too and hopefully will find success this time. If you don't mind me telling, how old are you... I guess I can have a little more optimism. Though I hope it doesn't get to it but in case we have to move to next round we'll repeat the twin transfer only. So far I have only had positive outcomes... both from people who've had it and some good amount of internet research. Like any failed person would do.... I was trying to figure out the loopholes if any .. just in case. We're not going to change our mind about the twin transfer I guess... but I believe knowing what the odds are always helps.

Don’t mind you asking at all, I’m 34.

We were offered one or two for our frozen cycle which was our second try after the first did not work. Having two transferred does not double your risk of implantation- the success rate only goes up a few per cent with two if you are under 38 (and that is pregnancy rate not live birth rate). My husband was keen on two but I was mindful of all the increased risks with a twin pregnancy - to my health and to an extent the babies so we opted for one and we are now just over 12 weeks pregnant. Bear in mind that there is a 1%risk of the embryo splitting into identical twins too! If this cycle had failed, I probably would have gone for two next time. It’s a very personal decision- if you have diabetes in your family or blood pressure problems then it’s worth thinking carefully.

Re implantation- like others have said, it’s a combination of factors of both embryo and uterus.

Good luck xx

There was a lady on here a couple of years ago who had two implanted which both split into identical twins too! She had four babies!

Thanks for the elaborate explanation! I've heard embryo splitting is totally coincidental, right? You gauged my worries explicitly... it is indeed if my uterus can support a full-term with twins or as you said if splitting happens more. As far as My RE is absolutely sure that in case both implants health wise I will not have any sort of troubles to manage with twin gestation. I don't have a history of diabetes or high blood pressure though, but now knowing it could be more is definitely worth serious consideration.

It's good to have an added advantage of raised chance of success with twin transfer but it will only be effective if I could make it till the end. I guess I don't need change my plans of twin transfer right away... considering both embryo and uterus matters for implantation n continuation of pregnancy, my donor-egg embryos n a 36 year old uterus have a average and not very good chance of making it through. Hopefully, if fate really wanna payback for all the efforts over the fertility journey I'll just make it to twins.

My first DE cycle I had one blast transferred and it failed,my 2nd cycle I had two blasts transferred I did get pregnant with twins but we lost one at 9 weeks but we do have a healthy, beautiful 5 month baby girl (see my old posts) x x
