C section - blood thinners plus larger baby

Hi all Thanks to anyone that replied to my precious post about an elected c section

It looks very likely that I will be opting for an elective c section

I wondered if anyone on aspirin or Clexane can tell me when they took their last dose. I was told I could stop clexane like 24 hours before but that seems really close to the procedure? Apparently it only stays in the system for 12 hours but I feel very nervous stopping so soon.

One of the reasons for my c section is a baby on the larger size. Has anyone else opted for c section based on larger size baby? X x

Sorry I don't have any info on blood thinners but did opt for a c section because of baby's size. Growth scans showed him to be over 90th centile consistently and they were estimating 10lb at birth. I was offered induction but the consultant then tagged on a warning about shoulder dystocia and it worried me and I just wanted my baby here safely after all we'd been through to get him. In the end he was 9lb so very glad I opted for the c section!

Thank you for commenting. Can I ask how the c section went?

From the birth point of view it went perfectly, all very calm and he came out easily and I lost very little blood. I did have a weird reaction to the anaesthetic though and the meds they gave me to get my heart rate back up then spiked my blood pressure so I had a terrible headache so I was not really able to feel present. But I have literally never heard of that happening to anyone else and everyone else I have spoken to has had a great experience with planned c section. The recovery is no joke but from what I understand it's easier to recover from a planned than an emergency!

My water broke unexpectedly at 35 weeks while I was still on clexane and aspirin. I drove straight in and they wanted to go ahead and do the c-section that day. They waited a little bit while they discussed it with the maternal fetal medicine consultants, but said it was fine and did the c-section before 24 hours past, as apparently 12 hours is fine from last dose. I think it was roughly 18 hours past my last doses. All went well for me. Good luck lovely xx

I'm doing good thanks! I'm 20 weeks now with my next baby, so starting to have all the same birth worries creeping in. But we have got this! Hoping everything goes smoothly for you, I know it's getting close now xx

Hi I stopped aspirin 2 days before and clexane a little under 2 days due to the timing of when I took mine. Pretty much they start you on it again very soon after your section so don’t worry. They’d rather you don’t have it complicating the delivery. Ask them again at your pre op which should be a few days before and they’ll be very clear xx

Should say my baby was on the small side, but due to my age and ivf they didn’t want to take any chances so we went with a section at 37 weeks.

I don't have any experience to answer your specific questions but just writing to say very best of luck! I hope the procedure goes really smoothly. xx

Hi lovely, I'm on clexane and aspirin and was told by my consultant to stop them at the end of week 35 and then I would need clexane for 6 weeks post birth. Have you been tested for gestational diabetes as you mention the baby is a bit on the big size. This can be an indicator of GD. Hope you're doing well. X

So glad you don't have it. Although sorry you had to do the test twice. I have it unfortunately and it's a pain to manage. Wishing you a really lovely Christmas and hope all goes well with baby's arrival xx

I had a planned c-section and was taking aspirin throughout the pregnancy. I was told to stop the day before the c-section. My c-section went smoothly and I was up and about walking within a couple of days. I stopped pain relief within 10 days of the c section and even when I was taking pain relief it was only at night. Although I opted for a planned c-section I was worried however it was the right decision for me and my son who was delivered safely. I wish you the best of luck. X

I stopped clexane 24 hours before and started again after the c-section but can’t remember when I started again (same day or next day).

My boy was 9 pounds 14. So big!

C section was fine, wishing you all the best.

Xx

hi. I stopped 2 weeks before my elective c section. I hope you bought big c section pants. 6 weeks later I am still using them. 🤭

Hello! I was on both during my transfer. I stopped the clexsmce at 12 weeks. And didn’t stopped the aspirin throughout the pregnancy. So stopped thr aspirin two weeks before the c section - week 37. After the c section which was scheduled for week 39 plus 3 days. I was given something similar to clexane (it was pre loaded syringe) to take 10 days post c section to prevent post operative clots.

So used cleanse as party of my ivf protocol and stopped it at 12 weeks but after the 12 scan and results (low papa - common in ivf pregnancies and high risk for preeclampsia due to age 43) I stayed on the 150mg of aspirin. Doctor asked me to stop at my 37 week scan as baby growth was normal no risk to the baby and as surgery was so close to limit excessive blood loss. After the procedure and she was born they gave me 10 days worth of blood thinners kinda of like clexane (to take subcutaneously) ie tummy or thigh (I suggest thigh) no bruising, the only thing that was a huge deal breaker did he was proper c section pants as they do put a platter on the cut and I found normal full undies/high waisted ones just slipped on the plaster and settled on the cut line!

Don’t forget to organise your playlist ahead of your theatre day. Button up this and high waisted joggers for the day and button up nightdresses for the night time. Get up the next day if you can and walk around. Let hubby pass you the baby for the first night for feeding (unless you have colostrum harvested) when you have the catheter in place. Flip flops for walking about and the shower and cosy socks for your bed, you will need help to put on socks and underwear and pulls up trousers! Best of luck hun ps take all the meds they offer even if you are not in pain because by the time the pain sets in, it will be way to uncomfortable to wait for the medication to start to work.
