flying short haul 3rd trimester

Hi everyone, just wondering what peoples thoughts/experiences are of flying a short haul at 30/31 weeks. I am supposed to flying from Belfast to Manchester next weekend to watch my hubby run the marathon - all booked before we knew about baby. Its a 50 min flight up and down. Easyjet allows you to fly up to 35 weeks.

I spoke to my consultant last week and she gave me the all clear to fly, ive no BP issues, low risk across the board (thank goodness, i feel so blessed). I asked outright 'are there any risks for me at all?' and she said no, just hydrate and get up and walk about the plane. I'll only be there a few days and then home again. Of course there is no issue with healthcare etc as I'm a UK citizen. There are some scan places where I'm staying, although by the looks of it, youd need to book a few days ahead so no last minute panic booking!

My mum is saying dont go, why take any risks at all even if just 1% but as i say, consultant was happy. I really want to support my husband who has worked so so hard to hopefully PB! Mum is in my head tho!

Would i be mad to go or am i completely overthinking it?

Much love

Joey xxx

Hi Joey, hope you are well. It's a very short flight plus you are in the UK...I think you will be okay. But anything can happen and I'd understand if you decided not to go. It's not a holiday, it's a marathon...you can still show your support even if you are not there. Hmmm, I agree with your mum x

I think it is all about what you feel comfortable with. I did many things during my pregnancy which my gynecologist was supportive of but others wouldn't have approved of, like cycling and climbing throughout the pregnancy. Even once you have your baby many will have strong opinions around what you should and shouldn't be doing. Where you have done your due diligence and you are medically cleared it simply becomes a question of what you are comfortable with. If you feel comfortable with your decision that is the most important thing. Remember your mental health and wellbeing are also important and doing what you feel is best should support this. My advice is consider would you still stand by your decision in a worst case scenario.

I think that's good advice and tbh no if something happened I would blame myself forever. I know I'm being super cautious and a huge part of me just wants to go and enjoy it. If it weren't for the flight I would go for a long weekend to watch no problem. Its just the flight x

Hey Joey, hope you are doing well. For me this is a matter of doing what you feel in your gut. If your consultant has given you the all clear then from a clinical perspective it is perfectly safe and no concerns but as we know the emotional perspective is also crucial. If the thought of flying will stress you out in advance of the trip and the return flight will also worry you whilst you are there, then it is probably not worth doing as it will spoil your enjoyment. But if you feel this wouldn't happen and you would enjoy yourself and not feel anxious then do it! Good luck with whatever you decide and good luck also to your husband for the marathon! Xx

Hello my love. Hope you are good xx

Honestly anxious is my middle name at this stage and like many of us, I would never do anything to risk baby, my grey hairs testify to that! Lol prob is my consultant said there is no risk so now I'm confused.

I just know how much it means to my husband as he's worked so hard but of course baby comes first! My mum had my sister at 29 weeks so I truly believe anything can happen!

If you decide to go and have any problems not that you will have Saint Mary’s hospital is 7 mins in a taxi from where your hubby is running you just ring triage 0161 276 6567 that’s Oxford rd campus have your nhs number to hand they would tell you to come straight in nice hospital but you will not need it just take things slow

Hi Joeysjourney, I had to fly internally in the UK for work at 29 weeks and had these thoughts too, but decided to go and it was completely fine. The flight is so short and it actually felt really good to be doing something normal. It is such a personal decision, so go with your gut, but know there are plenty of us do fly after difficult journeys and it is completely fine to do it if you are comfortable with it. Maybe just make sure you give yourself plenty of time so you aren't rushing through security or anything! xx

It's the intrusive thoughts that are getting to me. Every Google search I've done has said its no problem if the pregnancy is uncomplicated but I can't shake the worry! Most people would just be happy with their consultants advice. But not me lol

I had previously had two miscarriages and was very anxious during my last and successful pregnancy. However we had booked a holiday to Turkey before I found out I was pregnant. We decided to go. I must have been 10 weeks pregnant so still in the first trimester. My consultant told me to go and have a nice time and that the baby is more robust than one thinks. The flight was fours hours. I kept hydrated. I walked around a lot. I was still naturally worried but then again I was worried throughout my whole pregnancy. I didn’t have any issues and now have a happy and healthy 26 month old boy. Ultimately it’s your decision and what you feel comfortable with but I thought I’d share my experience. I wish you best of luck for the rest of your pregnant. You are nearly there. X

Thanks for sharing. Part of me is desperate to go as I known how much it means to my husband but the other side thinks I've come this far and I don't want to mess anything up. Honestly in two minds but baby comes first no matter what!

I can't believe I'm nearly there but you're right. I'm so close!! I am just over the moon and back again. So so delighted 🙌🏼

If your dr said there is no risk and it’s such a short flight I wouldn’t give it a second thought.
